Why High Strangeness

"High Strangeness" is the name given by field investigators for the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) to UFO encounters that are, well, stranger than other UFO encounters. High Strangeness is, to put it most appropriately, the mothership of strange. It seems to me that once you enter the realm of UFO-type phenomenon, pretty much everything is High Strangeness, but one thing I've learned from my lifetime fascination with Unidentified Flying Objects and extraterrestrial life-forms is that people who study these manifestations of supreme weirdness love to impose logical structure to them, no matter how poorly it fits. And that includes categorizing strange events by the strangeness of their strangeness.

That's one of the reasons I'm writing this blog. I have decided to join the Mutual UFO Network and become a field investigator. With any luck, a few months from now I will be trotting around Wisconsin investigating UFO encounters and learning to apply human logic and structure to this most un-human of experiences. For this is what MUFON field investigators do: they questions witnesses, collect evidence and categorize the incident according to standards set out in the MUFON Field Investigator's handbook. I will become a UFO CSI investigator, and I plan to record my progress and experiences here, even if some of them turn out to be kind of normal.

How it will start, I do not know. The MUFON people have been very slow to respond to my inquiries. I have given up on the Wisconsin chapter and contacted the Illinois chapter, in the hopes that Illinois has more, and higher, strangeness than Wisconsin (many Wisconsinites would say that this is true; after all, Illinois has the Bears). At this point, it seems more likely that I will be contacted by ETs than officials from MUFON

I kid. I'm sure they are very busy people who have a lot of UFO sightings to investigate, and I'm sure they struggle to balance their MUFON work with their family lives and careers. I will write again when I have been contacted by a MUFON official and instructed on my next steps. I will also write if I am contacted by Men In Black who try to discourage me from seeking the truth about UFOs. That'll show them.

It Is Time

This week, at last, I will set out to take the MUFON Field Investigator's Examination. After months of research and study, after tangling with two MUFON International Directors, after having my own two UFO sightings investigated by MUFON operatives, it is time.

When you go to take the exam, the first thing you discover is that it's not just an exam... There's a whole mess of documents that you need to fill out and submit to the High Council before your Field Investigator status will be activated or access to CMS will be granted." Among these documents are:

* Field Investigator Personal Info
* Field Investigator Test Answer Sheet
* MUFON Volunteer Disclosure Statement
* Field Investigator Volunteer Agreement ("At Will" Agreement)
* Field Investigator Confidentiality Agreement

They want to know my name. They want to know my fax number. They want to know if I've ever been convicted of a felony. And then, because they don't trust me, they want to do a background check on me, too. Then they want me to sign a confidentiality agreement. Which is fine, except I'm confused about item #4: "All findings, including but not limited to the following: measurements, photographs, video of any kind, drawings, renditions, witness testimony, hearsay evidence, and writing." That's where the sentence ends. I have no idea what they want me to do with all my findings, but I guess it means they trust me to do the right thing.

And that, my friends, is the hard part. The exam itself is ridiculously easy, and if I don't pass this sucker I really don't deserve to be in the UFO racket at all, ever.

Then, turn to page 7 in the MUFON Field Investigator's Manual, and look under the heading entitled "Objectives of the Code of Ethics." There you will read the following: "The objectives of the Code of Ethics are: to promote free and dispassionate investigations of UFO sightings with due regard to the rights of the percipients; to promote an understanding of the aims of MUFON by percipients and the community in general... and so forth.

Long story short: MUFON hands you the answers on a silver platter. Which, strangely enough, is what many UFOs look like.

But then there is the odd brain-twister like Question #89:

Straight To The Top

Tonight I had the rare pleasure of having my latest UFO sighting investigated by the Wisconsin State MUFON Director herself. I don't know what I did to get my case kicked so far upstairs, but the air up there tastes just fine! MUFON didn't send any rookies or trainees to handle this case, no sir. And I can guess why. I'm pretty certain that the State Director sussed out what a juicy case this was going to be, and she wanted it to herself. Trust me: I've been in this UFO game long enough to know that that's how State Directors get to be National Directors, and how National Directors get to be International Directors. I've got no problems with that at all. "As long as she takes me with her..."

Now, on to the interview. Vxxxx, the State Director and soon-to-be National Director, if I have anything to say about it, was calling from the road; that's how dedicated she is! She and her husband, Cxxxx, are at this very moment savoring the sights of sunny California from their RV. But, knowing how explosive this sighting was, Vxxxx interrupted her sightseeing to talk to me for a full half-hour as Cxxxx manned the wheel of the RV.

I was immediately impressed when Vxxx told me that she had already watched my video of the sighting; clearly, her investigation had begun long before we spoke this evening...

Slowly, haltingly, I gave Vxxxx the intel on the sighting, including as much factual detail as I could, and she started asking me the usual questions: Did any of the witnesses suffer any ill effects? Did the animals in the woods show any signs of disturbance? Did the UFOs leave behind any physical evidence? If Vxxxx was disappointed that my answer to pretty much all of her questions was "no," she didn't show it. She knew the truth was out there somewhere, and she wasn't going to let a few negative responses slow her down.

Then Vxxxx and Cxxxx pulled a switcheroo on me. Without warning, Cxxxx started to pepper me with questions:

Cxxxx: Did anyone in the group have an ultraviolet camera with them?

Me: Mmmm, no.

Cxxxx: Did anyone in the group have an infrared camera with them?

Me: Errr, no.

Cxxxx: Did anyone in the group have a night vision camera with them?

Me: You know, I never thought to ask.

Cxxxx seemed a bit let down, so I tried to explain to him that this was a group of 30 or so very silly people out in the woods late at night looking for spirits and ectoplasm, and that as far as I could tell no one on the Haunted Woods Tour that night was actually a part of any black ops team. I even had to admit shamefully that I hadn't even had my Flip video camera on a tripod... For some reason this seemed to be an important detail.

First I read the June issue and it was full of all sorts of crap about the Citizen Hearing on Disclosure, which I did not read about, so I closed that up and opened the May issue.

There I found some interesting news from the editor of the MUFON Journal, a guy named Roger Marsh. He announced that he is now blogging on Huffington Post, which is cool, and that he recently appeared on a HuffPost radio show to talk about MUFON's work, which is also cool. But what happened on the radio show was not cool at all. Also appearing on the show was astronomer Seth Shostak, who works on the very cool Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project. You would think that Mr. Shostak and Mr. Marsh would have a lot in common, and would have a very pleasant conversation about alien life, but you would be wrong.

Mr. Marsh states that at the end of the show, Mr. Shostak got "nasty," and said that MUFON's search for evidence of aliens visiting Earth has "never turned over a single clue--not a single case--that suggests alien visitation."

That is nasty. It's also true, so settle down there, Mr. Marsh. And maybe you set off Mr. Shostak with your claim that what MUFON is searching for is "real," thereby insinuating that what SETI is searching for is in some way "not "real. That might have done it, don't you think?

Shaking my head, I turned to the President's column on the facing page, thinking I would find relief. I did for a time: President Dave proudly stated that MUFON has achieved "a stature never before possessed in our history," and went on to say that we are sought after, consulted with, recognized and respected like never before. That's all pretty nice, and I was starting to feel really good about taking on more of a leadership role with the organization.

Then President Dave's column took a sharp left into crazytown: "Now, that does not mean we don't have our detractors, he wrote. "There will always be a few sniveling whiners who have not gotten the memo. And if they have, they could not read it."

Do not snivel or whine in front of this guy or he will call you out on it.

"There will always be those who just will not accept that they have lost," he continued in a childlike rant. "They will continue their childlike ranting in the face of the truth and the truth is that they are wrong and that MUFON is at the top of our game."

Okay, straight off, I will confess that I'm one of the ones who got the memo and could not read it. It was pretty smudged, and had a huge coffee stain right in the middle of it. But who are the sniveling whiners, and why will they not accept that they've lost? And what exactly have they lost? And why won't they accept that MUFON (and I include myself here) is at the top of its game?

President Dave played it pretty cagily here, but his message isn't lost on me. There is obviously another UFO investigation organization out there that is made up in its entirety of sniveling whiners who can't read memos, and we at MUFON must crush them under the weight of our investigative might.

Despite myself, I feel compelled to join the fight. I am with you, President Dave! I will accept the post of Chief Investigator for the state of Wisconsin and I will strike a mighty blow for MUFON!

If the Star Team had gone to the witness's home by the next day, stealthily I might add, MUFON's Star Team may have fully documented the "Men in Black".

By the time the "Star Team" got around to the site to interview the witness, he had already been questioned and warned by the "Men in Black" and harassed by helicopters. The Star Team waited until the end of the week even though he complained to them about burns and sickness the next day which had do to with a direct attack by the object. These episodes around post close encounters can include a wide range of phenomenon including: Men in Black, threatening phone calls, government men, harassing helicopters and paranormal phenomenon. This has been well documented in hundreds of reported close encounters by MUFON itself. It's like MUFON investigators will not draw from the rich UFO history on these types of encounters. Of course no one could guarantee these post UFO encounters will happen but that's what innovative investigation is all about...taking chances. Those who don't learn from history are destined to repeat the same mistake over and over. This lack of speedy action seems to have permeated MUFON to its core.

A man probably had a powerful UFO close encounter of the "second kind. The person reporting this to MUFON on the phone was very credible and as it turned out later...way later, he had physical evidence to back it up. This case is documented in the latest MUFON Journal double issue Oct/Nov 09.

Let's go straight to the time line as reported by chief investigator John Michael Kledis, and secondary investigators Robert Coey:

This was Star Teams First Case:" andit had all the elements of a drama. First report Friday September 11 9-11:30 pm all 125 feet of it.

The Triangle released other smaller objects of various sizes and shapes as he watched. They were about eight to ten feet wide. These objects moved about and seem to land behind some trees. They then would go back near the triangle. The witness became very excited and decided to get his DVD camera. When he tried to film this object, the camera became inoperative (the next day and in the future it was fine). This is when the witness went to get his spotlight: a one million candle version. The witness decided he would aim the spotlight at this craft. The "triangle seemed to absorb the light" as it was first pointed at it, but then it reacted with an intense bluish white beam directed at the witness from the front section of the triangle. The experiencer, feeling great heat, ducked away from it and ran went into his house.

He continued staring at the object through the window as it slowly moved away. He called MUFON and was speaking to the investigator as he described the continuing experience and watched as the two smaller remaining objects beside the triangle "shot straight up into the night sky at incredible speed" as the main object moved away slowly into the distance.

Next will be Saturday September 12th (no time given):

The witness called MUFON to complain of burns and sickness. (For me, this was is a critical moment in this case because of its implications). MUFON calls the witness and sets up a meeting with him "as soon as possible" (a week?) What followed has been repeated so many times in UFO history, that I don't know why MUFON did not see the possibility of it happening, and to try some preemptive investigation.

2am Sunday morning, September 12th, UFO Witness's home is buzzed by 5 helicopters with searchlights, one coming very close to his home. His wife witnessed them, also.

7am Sunday morning, September 12th. Two men in a dark sedan, one around 40 and the other younger, came to his door and asked to interview the witness about his sighting. They stated to the witness "we are here about the UFO report you gave." The witness assumed they were MUFON.

Later that day MUFON contacted the witness to confirm an appointment they had made for later in the week. (good going MUFON: always a bride's maid). So I ask you, the reader, am I crazy or do you also see a missed opportunity here? First, if they had made it there by Saturday (convincing the witness how important it was to be there as soon as possible) they could have staked out the house and recorded it all. Second, either someone is tapping the phones at MUFON or some of the people at MUFON are in "intelligence".

Sunday 5-6pm, a helicopter circles the witness's premises and he gets a photo of it. No lost time on other phenomenon was noted.

MUFON's "Star Team" is never going to achieve anything that is new if they continue to do what has been done for decades: after the fact investigations.

On a brighter note there is a new editor of the MUFON journal and he sounds like he wants to bring the Journal up to the twenty first century. He seems to want to include new authors and he has decided to "open Pandora's box" and ask suggestions from those of you out there in MUFON land.

My suggestions:

First: Stop publishing articles attacking old UFO cases that rarely prove anything anyway, and start publishing articles on UFOs sightings in the 21 century.

Second: Publish articles critical of MUFON. We know the organization is not perfect and it needs to be air out from some of the old stuff. Who else but the rank and file can help MUFON achieve this?

My first allegiance is to the UFO witness and to getting his/her/their experience out to the investigators as quickly as possible. It is up to the investigators to gather the best supporting documentation possible. I doubt MUFON's Star Team will ever be able to do this if they constantly play catch-up.

This just burns...

A few months back, I submitted my list of Ten Things You Should Do When You See A UFO to Cliff Clift, International Director of MUFON, for publication in his organization's monthly Journal. Mr. Clift told me he enjoyed my list and wanted to publish it in the January issue of the Journal. All he had to do was secure the permission of his Board of Directors and it would be a done deal.

I was thrilled and flattered that Mr. Clift liked my list enough to want to share it with MUFON's membership, especially since I had written it in protest of MUFON's official list of what to do when you see a UFO. I thought their 17 year-old list was a bit on the dry side and needed some updating, and I thought Mr. Clift agreed that my list would make a nice counterpoint.

Today I heard from the new editor of the MUFON Journal that, while he thinks my list is funny, he is going to pass on publishing it, at least for now. He is afraid that people will read my list and take it seriously. By his reasoning, if enough people started to follow my recommendations when they see a UFO, they would forget to do all the really "important "things that MUFON wants them to do when they see a UFO, and that would be bad.

For instance, if they followed my #1 tip to Enjoy The Experience, they might not bother to consider MUFON's directive to hold an aspirin tablet up at arm's length and compare the size of the UFO to the tablet. Or if they followed my advice to Offer A Bottle Of Orange Soda Pop To An Alien, they might forget MUFON's orders to take evasive action and remain hidden from the alien. So, yes, if MUFON Journal readers took my list seriously, I suppose all sorts of bad things could happen.

In a way, it's tremendously flattering that he thinks people would follow my advice over his own. If you want to know the truth, I think he's terrified. Deep down inside his heart of hearts he must know that every member of his organization is waiting patiently for "someone "to tell them to do "something "that differs wildly from the MUFON orthodoxy, and he will stop at nothing to prevent that from happening, "because he knows they will do it!"

Then after all that, the editor said he doesn't want me to think that MUFON doesn't have a sense of humor, because they do.

I'll just let that hang there.

Say It Aint So Mufon

I got a rather distressing tweet last night from one of the many #UFO tweeters out there saying that MUFON International Director Clifford Clift is resigning his post, and handing the reins over to a new guy in Ohio. I was little alarmed at first; I've exchanged a few pleasant emails with Mr. Clift and found him to be a very personable guy. It's more than a bit discouraging to realize that I'm going to have start all over again buttering up a new International Director... And, oh yeah, I just shelled out 90 for my MUFON Field Investigator Guide and t-shirt; am I suddenly going to find out that the Guide and t-shirt are no longer recognized by the new leadership?

What's even more discouraging is that, when I did a search today for more news about the changing of the guard, I discovered that MUFON seems to have a history of abrupt, and sometimes contentious, turnovers in leadership. Mass firings! Secret tapings of board meetings! Say it ain't so, MUFON, say it ain't so! You're supposed to be proving that UFOs are real and pressuring the government to disclose everything it knows about Roswell, not bickering amongst yourselves!

Sadly, I also discovered that the news of Mr. Clift's departure is not mentioned anywhere on the MUFON website... Hmmm.

It's enough to make a guy want to go off and found his own UFO research organization. And I can say that because MUFON itself rose out of the ashes of another UFO group that bit the dust back in the 1970s. If it was good enough for them, it's good enough for me.

But what to call my new organization? All the good UFO acronyms have already been taken: MUFON, CUFOS, FUFOR, NUFORC, UFOIL, UFORNA, UFORM, UFOLATS, GUFOA, ACUFOS, UFOSS, BUFOS, NUFON, PRUFO, HUFOS, RUFOR, SUFOR, KPUFO, BUFONET--my God, these people are creative.

As far as I can see, there is only one name left to use: BUFORD. As you may know, Buford is a boy's name that reached the zenith of its popularity sometime around 1910 (according to thinkbabynames.com). It also makes a handy acronym for the Bureau of UFO Research and "I hit a brick wall with 'D.' I'm sure I'll come up with something, but if you have any ideas feel free to post them.

Man... I just wanted to become a Certified UFO Field Investigator... I never bargained on all this.

Mufon Reaction To Ian Brockwell Ufo Article

Ian Brockwell recently wrote this piece for American Chronicle, UFO Photographed in Thunderstorm Reveals Alien Life!, about entities inside a UFO that was photographed during a thunderstorm.

All very interesting. I like what Brockwell says about MUFON in the article:

It is somewhat disappointing that the MUFON site states:

"..one reason people join MUFON is because they want to be trained and have the opportunity to investigate cases. They want the hands-on, personal experience of interviewing witnesses, collecting information and analysing it themselves, instead of just reading about what others have done." Elaine Douglass, Co-State Director, Utah MUFON.

And when a member does just that, he is told that he "does not represent MUFON as a whole" and Carrion says "We have a standard process for investigation that is outlined in our field investigator manual, a certification process for field investigators and a mentoring program to hone their investigative skills. We have a body of consultants that assist in research. People join MUFON because they want to be part of this process."

You are wrong James, people join MUFON (and organizations like yours) in the hope that this will improve their chances of obtaining the truth, not to be told that they can't try new methods (valid or not) just because you don't personally approve.

MUFON also attacks American Chronicle, stating that American Chroncile "has no standards for who writes for them." As Brockwell points out, American Chronicle publishes UFO stories. We need all the UFO info we can get. Mainstream media isn't doing it for us.

The point seems to be that MUFON attacks Brockwell for not being upfront, though Brockwell says he is, and from what I can see, he is. Agreeing with him or not, that's another issue. But as long as one is honest, that's all we can expect in this field.

Why MUFON seems to have a big buzzing bee in their bonnet lately is something I don't understand.

It's always good to do self checking and see what needs improvement; this is obvious and true in any field, including UFOs. But no one gets to tell anyone else what to do or say in UFOlogy, no matter how hard some might try bully others.

Instead of fighting each other, we should really acknowledge the diverse work being done by often equally diverse individuals.
