Nasa Ponders The Implications Of The Discovery Of Extraterrestrial Life

To examine the effects of the discovery of extraterrestrial life, whether it be a microbe, or a radio transmission from an advanced civilization, NASA has turned to one of their former chief historians, Steven Dick.
Dick is the current Baruch S. Blumberg NASA-Library of Congress Chair in Astrobiology. He is an astronomer, author, and from 2003 to 2009 served as NASA's chief historian. Dick began his current position in late 2013, and was tasked with "examining historical impacts of astrobiology." This includes, "working both individually and with other scholars to determine systematically the critical issues and optimal approaches to studying the societal impact of the discovery of microbial or intelligent extraterrestrial life."
The later has been of particular interest to Dick. He has written several books on the topic. He hosted a recent Symposium on these issue as well. It was held in September at the Library of Congress, and was free and open to the public.

An interview with Dick was recently posted on the website of "Astrobiology Magazine". He told them, "It's very farsighted for NASA to fund a position like this. They have all their programs in astrobiology, they fund the scientists, but here they fund somebody to think about what the implications might be. It's a good idea to do this, to foresee what might happen before it occurs."
So what does Dick think might happen? Well, for starters, even if the discovery was only a microbe, Dick says, "it would have an effect on science, especially biology, by universalizing biology." Dick continued, "We only have one case of biology on Earth. It's all related. It's all DNA-based. If we found an independent example on Mars or Europa, we have a chance of forming a universal biology."
However, Dick also points out that such a discovery would be a long arduous process. "I've done a book about discovery in astronomy, and it's an extended process," Dick pointed out. "It's not like you point your telescope and say, 'Oh, I made a discovery.' It's always an extended process: You have to detect something, you have to interpret it, and it takes a long time to understand it. As for extraterrestrial life, the Mars rock showed it could take an extended period of years to understand it."
The Mars rock Dick refers to is meteorite ALH84001. It was discovered in the Antarctic in 1984. After 10 years of study, scientists had determined it came from Mars. Then, in 1996, scientists declared that structures observed on the meteorite showed evidence of biological activity. The news that it was the first time we had found evidence of life on a planet other than our own was a pretty big deal. President Bill Clinton held a press conference, and the Senate Science, Technology and Space Subcommittee of the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee held a hearings.

However, there were dissenting views. Many scientists came forward to express their opinions that the evidence observed in the rock could all have been formed without the presence of biological activity. The last congressional hearing, held on September 25, 1996, concluded that "more studies are needed and the only way this can be accomplished is by sending additional spacecraft to Mars to collect more samples."
In essence, they called it a draw, and the debate continues.
Dick is also examining the effects of contact with more complex extraterrestrials, such as those that might contact us via radio signals. The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) is monitoring the great void of space for those signals, should they exist, but what if they begin to receive messages?
"There is also the question of what I call astro-ethics," Dick said. "How do you treat alien life? How do you treat it differently, ranging from microbes to intelligence? So we had a philosopher at our symposium talking about the moral status of non-human organisms, talking in relation to animals on Earth and what their status is in relation to us."
Some of Dick's colleagues, and fellow presenters at his Symposium at the Library of Congress, examined some of these issues in a film that recently premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Meanwhile, Dick continues to look into these issues and plans on writing more books on the topic.

Famous Ufo Witness Announces 40Th Anniversary Event
In case you did not know, today is Alien Abduction Day, also known as Extraterrestrial Abduction Day. As we wrote about in 2012, the origins of the holiday is unknown, but it now has its own Wikipedia entry.
So what better day to announce details about a unique and rare opportunity regarding perhaps the most famous alien abduction event ever. According to the website, the public is invited to "Join Travis Walton on a guided walking tour of the actual site where he encountered a burning fire in the sky and was taken aboard a spacecraft of unknown origin. As twilight approaches, you will be led through the forest while Travis takes you step-by-step through his harrowing experience."

Walton's harrowing experience made headlines when he went missing. After seeing Walton zapped, his coworkers took off, assuming he was dead. They returned soon after, but the UFO and Walton were gone. They raced to report Walton's disappearance to the police, but the police had a hard time believing their friend was attacked by a UFO. A massive man hunt was mounted, but as time when on, authorities began suspecting that Walton's friends must have killed Walton and concocted a wild story about a UFO taking him away.
Eventually, Walton returned. He thought he had been gone only a few hours, but it turned out to be five days. Walton remembered seeing the UFO before it zapped him. He then didn't remember anything until being dropped off on the side of the street and seeing the UFO flying off in the night sky above him.
Later, under regression, he remembered strange events taking place onboard some sort of apparent spacecraft.

The 1993 movie "Fire in the Sky", was based on Walton's experiences, and portrayed the events fairly accurately, except for what Walton remembers happening under regression. The movie starred D.B. Sweeney, James Garner and Robert Patrick.
The movie is often criticized for not staying true to the Walton's experience when it comes to what Walton remembered under regression. However, Tracy Torme, singer Mel Torme's son, who is a filmmaker and wrote the script for "Fire in the Sky", will be giving a lecture at an anniversary event being held after the UFO site tour to explain why the producers asked him to make the changes.
Torme's talk will be part of the Skyfire Summitt, which will be held in Heber/Overgaard, Arizona, near the location where the UFO was seen on November 5, 1975. The event will begin the day after the UFO site tour, running from November 6 - 8, 2015, and will include lectures from Walton and UFO researchers, and a panel with Walton and some of the men who witnessed his disappearance.

On the evening of Saturday 24th October, witness Scott Norville had a sighting of two glowing orange UFOs. It was about 8pm and Scott was driving home from Northampton centre. By this time of evening the roads were relatively quiet, though there were a few other cars around. It was an overcast night with full cloud cover, so the stars were not visible at all.
As Scott drove along London Road, he suddenly noticed an orange light in the sky about half a mile from his position to the South West West. He estimated it was about 3000 feet high. He watched the light, expecting it to flash and indicate to him that it was an aircraft or helicopter. He thought to himself that perhaps it was the "Sywell Blades" aerobatic team on their way back to Sywell Aerodrome. However the light appeared to be coming from an individual object and was constantly bright. It looked to be heading in his direction slowly, at about 10 mph. After 20 seconds he decided to pull over and get out to take a better look at the object.
The object continued to head on a straight path towards his position. As it flew overhead, it appeared to be circular in shape and quite large, he estimates it was 20-25 metres across. He also noted that it was completely silent. It continued onward on the same course until it was lost behind some trees. In total he had watched the object for about 3 minutes. Looking back in the direction it had come from, Scott then saw a second object which looked exactly the same. Again it flew on the same path as the first object and passed over his position.

Once the second object had been lost from sight, he got back in his car and continued his journey home. A short while later, he checked the internet and found that there have been a number of similar sightings in the area over recent months.
Scott is interested in aviation. He has been to many air shows and is a member of the Vulcan to the sky club. He is used to seeing aircraft in the sky, but these objects were like nothing he had ever seen before. He says that they looked too large to be Chinese lanterns, and is aware that some sightings of orange lights do turn out to be these.
Other than the apparent size of the objects, they do share many characteristics with lanterns. They were not flickering but sometimes lanterns can appear constantly bright. They moved on the same flight path at a slow speed, were not at a particularly high altitude, and did not perform any manoeuvres which would suggest they were under intelligent control, so may well have been drifting in the direction of the wind. It is possible that the objects appeared bigger than they actually were. It is sometimes hard to judge the size against the night sky as there is no point of reference. Also the brightness of the glow can sometimes make lanterns look a lot larger. Could the witness have mistaken two Chinese lanterns for something much more unusual? It is hard to say for sure, but at this point I feel this is probably what took place. In recent years lanterns have become much more popular and are readily available, and are no doubt responsible for many of the orange orb sightings reported to both BUFOG and other groups or websites.

Secondly, be strong mentally. Remember the golden rule with paranormal or the occult is fear can only attract bad, so if you be positive your energy will only react as a defense. Another aspect to consider is maybe the paranormal activity is not trying to communicate, maybe more it is just replaying itself like a residual haunting. A common example of this is a light switching on at 8 o clock every night but nothing else happens, next day same thing happens.
OKAY SO HERE ARE SIX WAYS TO DETECT PARANORMAL / OCCULT ACTIVITY IN YOUR HOUSE
1 ) LIGHTS ON AND OFF - A common paranormal activity is lights switching on and off. This happens because an energy passes by the light and sucks or drains the electricity from the source temporarily. Occasionally it is a electric fault so ruling this out is important. An interesting experience happened to me once when I was visiting my sister, each light in the house switched on one after the other and then backwards in the same sequence and then the last one flickering. Interestingly none of the lights were on except the room we were in.. Spooky hey..
2 ) TV SWITCHING CHANNELS OR TURNING ON AND OFF - TV is another common one, ever had your tv turn off and then before you turn it back on it switches back on. This is a very common paranormal activity, the TV turning off or changing channels. The theory is that as a paranormal energy passes by it disrupts the on / off frequency. Commonly most of the time this paranormal is a spirit.
3 ) ITEMS MOVED - This is a frustrating one, you check for your car keys or house keys and they are not there. Then later on after searching your house you find them where the were not in the beginning. A lot of people shrug this one off, but it definitely is a paranormal occurrence. The theory with this one is a spirit or intelligent energy is delaying your day for a reason. It may be a foretold car accident or something similar. Some people refer to this action as being looked after by an angel, who likes you. While others say it is just a mischievous spirit. Maybe when this happens next time it may be because of a reason..
4 ) CAR NOT STARTING - This is another common one, the car will not start and then the next day before you decide to get it towed to get fixed, it starts for some reason. In a way like the car knew it was about to be towed to a mechanics.. A lot of the time this could be a coincidence and a standard mechanical fault, however if it happens in certain patterns chances are it is paranormal. I have a friend who has a spirit in his car, it was a good spirit and if at any time his car would not start all he did was talk to the car and the spirit and then five minutes later the car would start. I am unsure as to why spirits or energies would attach themselves to cars but it does happen..
5 ) DOORS OPENING AND CLOSING - Hey that's strange, how did that door open or how did that door close? This is probably the most easily confused one as doors could open or close with the wind. However when there no breeze that day and it happens it indicates something different. Doors are easily pushed and if you have a spirit in the house they can be moved lightly with there spirit passing by. This one really needs due time of trial and error to work out if it is paranormal. Make sure to check for breezes even from the floor and close all external doors and windows to see if it still happens..
6 ) VOICES AND FOOTSTEPS - These two are probably the most spooky of the lot and are massive signs. The first one being voices is interesting, try to record the voices. It may sound like hard to hear whispers, but on a recorder you can turn it up to work out what may be the spirit or paranormal energy is saying. The second one footsteps is a spooky one also. Basically said this is a common one when sleeping, waking up to footsteps. You go to investigate but there is nothing there. With this one it could keep recurring until you are certain there is something going on..
This happened to me in a haunted house I lived in in "DORRIGO" when I was younger. Footsteps were very common and sometimes even the footsteps could be heard outside my room and then stop at my door. This was a nightly haunt so every night it was the same. Footsteps and a bad smell of a sweaty older man.. I have more to say on this haunt but will include it in a future post as there is a lot of detail.
OVERALL PARANORMAL IS REAL
There are many other ways to tell as well, these 6 ways are some of the standard ones I find in any paranormal haunting situation. In other extreme situations, it could be moving objects, doors slamming, seeing a apparition or even being physically abused by the spirit or entity. These ones I refer to as upset energies. They are not common however if you do come across one in your life be cautious and be wise on handling. "IT IS IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER THAT TO SOME SPIRITS OR ENERGIES, THEY MAY BE UPSET OR ANGRY BECAUSE THEY WANT YOU OUT OF THERE HOUSE.."

Is It Time To Bury The Yeti Myth
Why is the creature - if it indeed exists - so coy? Even though the search for the yeti has been going on for almost a century and there have been numerous reports of possible sightings, purported hair samples and supposed footprints, conclusive proof has never been found.
In November last year, there was a flicker of hope when organisers of the International Yeti Conference in Russia's Kemerovo region claimed they had found nests built by the creature. In fact, they went to the extent of claiming they were "95% certain of finding the yeti at long last". However, much of the evidence, according to scientists who attended the conference, turned out to be doubtful, and possibly planted to increase tourism to the region. "The markers in the forest, footprints and nests in the cave, which were shown to conference participants were rather questionable," says Jeff Meldrum of the department of biological sciences of Idaho State University, one of the conference attendees.
This may make it yet another dead end in the search for the creature, who has often been touted by enthusiasts as the possible missing link in the human evolution chain. Many biologists have already dubbed the search as futile, pointing out that all the upright walking mammals have been discovered and classified a long time back. Brian Regal, historian of science at Kean University says that even though yetis have a certain evolutionary plausibility - and we might find out tomorrow that they exist - it seems very unlikely, based on the evidence available. "I would argue they are so hard to find because they are not out there to find," he says.
Many yeti searchers are not convinced though - especially the hobbyists and cryptozoologists.
However, cryptozoology - the search for animals whose existence has not been proved - is debunked as "pseudoscience" by biologists, who believe that it relies heavily on anecdotal information and less on an academic approach. Cryptozoologists who have been hunting for the yeti tend to believe that it could be related to the Gigantopithecus blacki, a giant ape that lived in India and China half a million years ago. British cryptozoologist Richard Freeman of the Centre for Fortean Zoology, who has travelled extensively in search of the creature says that he "found hair, saw tracks and a hand print".
He also claims that in Sumatra, one of his associates spotted another elusive animal, the orang-pendek, an upright walking ape thought to be related to the larger yeti of mainland Asia. But conclusive proof of the yeti has eluded him.
It is this frustrating lack of proof that has dimmed public enthusiasm for the yeti's search over the years. Even though claims like that of the Russian researchers rejuvenate interest levels momentarily, their debunking ensures that the yeti moves one step further into the category of mythological creatures. However, unlike other legendary animals like dragons or unicorns, the yeti's evolutionary plausibility holds the tantalizing prospect that it might just be out there - a point that even dyed-in-the-wool sceptics like Delhi-based Sanal Edamaruku, president of the India Rationalist Association, agree with. "There is nothing absurd about the idea that there could be an undiscovered living being roaming on snowy mountaintops, as it does not contradict reason or science like say, the existence of ghosts does."
As of now though, the yeti seems more like a ghost - a product of the imagination - rather than a real live creature. Unless of course, the next set of claims manage to prove otherwise.
