Astrobiology is a pretty broad category of study, but it includes the search for earth-like exoplanets beyond our solar system, and the identification of possible biosignatures on other worlds, including Mars. But the research also includes significant work close to home, including research into the past, present and future of life on Earth. Unsurprisingly, that research, and the technology used to complete it, has a cornucopia of very practical applications. Astrobiology technology, for example, was used to locate and map out the plume from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon spill, something NASA's Dr. Mary A. Voytek mentioned in her testimony today.
It's really cool stuff, and has produced a series of exciting discoveries in recent years: before the Kepler spacecraft ended its planet-hunting mission, it collected years of data that indicates there are billions of earth-like planets in the milky way alone. Just yesterday, NASA announced that the Hubble telescope traced signatures of water in the atmospheres of five different planets, orbiting nearby stars. But the research leading to these discoveries are exactly the sorts of programs that the agency might cut if the sequestration is still around in early 2014. As "The Alantic "explained earlier today, those cuts would likely kill the still-active Cassani mission to learn about nearby planets. The Planetary Society is in the middle of an urgent campaign to lobby Congress to stop those cuts. In the meantime, there are some worrying reports coming from NASA on the near future of the search for other planets:

But they are exciting ones, and ones that betray a curiosity and engagement with what science does that is not customarily seen in this wing of Congress. That's in part because planetary research is the sort of research that gets everyone excited. It's kind of a gateway science, which is why it has fruitful applications to science education initiatives, and public engagement. Although it's too early to tell whether today's panel will translate into relief for any of the many, many cash-strapped publicly funded research initiatives in the future (it could very well have no effect at all), these are exactly the kinds of discussions legislators need to have about the programs hurt by budget cuts. With adequate resources and funding, witness Sara Seager told the committee that scientists could find signs of life beyond earth in a generation. But right now, that funding isn't there.

Stefan Michalak was burned by one of two flying saucers with which he reportedly came into contact on May 19, 1967
Michalak, a resident of Winnipeg, Canada, had taken a short vacation in Whiteshell Provincial Park to prospect veins of quartz near Falcon Lake when he spotted two cigar-shaped objects descending, one of which landed near him. Rutkowski and Dittman write that Michalak felt pain and sickness after his encounter and was treated at a hospital, initially claiming the burns were caused by airplane exhaust. Michalak's family physician reportedly stated that Michalak was confused and dazed but rational, and showed signs of hair loss and a series of raised oval-shaped sores on Michalak's chest and abdomen in a grid-like pattern, similar to a first-degree burn. Reportedly, health problems plagued Michalak for several months, including lack of appetite, weight loss, swelling, and fainting spells, despite a Mayo Clinic psychiatrist stating that Michalak was free of "significant mental or emotional illness." Michalak died in 1999, age 83
Michalak's concentration was disturbed by a noise similar to geese's grunts. When he looked up, he spotted two cigar-shaped objects, which were red and brilliant as fire. They were descending at 45 degrees, as calculated by the witness. He also noticed that, the more they approached the more oval they became.
One of the objects stopped in the air, while the other landed on a big rock 160 feet away from Michalak. After some moments, the object floating above Michalak changed its color to grey, and then flew directly west, disappearing through the clouds. The landed object also changed to grey, and then to a color similar to incandescent stainless steel.
From the inferior opening of the object, some violet light rays were emitted. As Michalek was using special glasses to examine the quartz, the rays didn't affect him. The object had a sulphurous smell, and a humming noise.
Half an hour passed, and Michalak still was observing the spaceship. Suddenly, a door opened and he could see that the interior of the UFO was very illuminated. He approached some meters and heard some voices coming from inside the ship.
Believing that the object was an experimental American flying object, he tried to make a contact in English. As no answers were given, he tried other languages in vain. Nervous, he walked to the open door, and saw a panel and some lights inside the ship.
He did not see anybody, so he waited. Suddenly, the door closed. Despite the surprise, he discovered a colorful glass around the UFO. It was very well-conserved, with no cracks. He attempted to touch it, but his glove simply melted, the heat hurting his hand through the glove's protection.
Quietly, a metallic box full of holes got off the UFO, what seemed to be a grid-like exhaust vent. A steamy explosion occurred, and some kind of gas was expelled in his direction. Immediately, his clothes started to burn. As the object flew after the other one, Michalak was left behind desperately trying to extinguish the fire.
Once the fire was extinguished, Michalak felt pain and sickness and noticed a metallic odour from the inside of his body, like the smell of something electric that is burning. He tried to go to the motel, but he stopped several times, feeling sick. He was later treated upon arrival at a hospital. He initially claimed the burns were caused by airplane exhaust.
Michalak's family physician, R.D. Otaway, reported that Michalak was confused and dazed, but rational. Otaway further reported hair loss, and a series of raised oval-shaped sores on Michalak's chest and abdomen in a grid-like pattern, similar to a first-degree burn. The nature of these burns remained difficult to explain.
Health problems plagued Michalak for several months, including lack of appetite, weight loss, swelling, and fainting spells. A Mayo Clinic psychiatrist stated Michalak was free of "significant mental or emotional illness."
By late June of 1967, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) had taken an interest in Michalek's claims. They could not identify the site on their own, and on June 1st they brought Michalek with them. However, Michalek could not locate the site, which raised further doubts regarding his claim. The RCMP also confirmed that Michalek had consumed multiple bottles of beer the night before the sighting.
By June 26th, Michalek had located the site and recovered personal belongings he had left there. The RCMP obtained soil samples from the location, which they tested for radioactivity. The tests were positive.
On July 28th, Michalek and RCMP officers together identified a semi-circle on the rock face at the scene, 15 feet in diameter, where the moss had been somehow removed. There were traces of radiation in a fault in the rock across the center of the landing spot. No trace of radiation was found around the outer perimeter of the circle or in the moss or grass below the raised portion of the rock.
The radioactive material found in the rock fault was radium 226, an isotope in wide commercial use and also found in nuclear reactor waste. They concluded that the level of radiation posed no danger to humans in the area.
The Department of National Defence identifies the Falcon Lake case as unsolved.

Taking Back The Roswell Site

"ROSWELL IS TO UFO'S WHAT JERUSALEM IS TO CHRISTIANS AND JEWS", and what Mecca is to Muslims. But the fascination that we have toward Roswell isn't that we worship UFO phenomena or that we ever hope to see such a thing while we're there. Our sense of wonder about the place is that so many others consider it to be almost holy ground for the UFO community. Around the Fourth of July the town explodes into a frenzy of everything extraterrestrial. On every street you can find something that related to aliens or some sort of occult theme. But amongst all of the satanic revelry there are a group of Bible believing Born Again Christians who hold on to what God has given them; a mission to preach to those who are UFO thrill seekers.
We woke on Friday [July 1, 2005] in great expectation that we would be heading out to the crash site at an early cool hour so that we could beat the heat. As I sat in the restaurant eating my free breakfast I wondered what the trip would show us. I wondered if we would pick up any artifacts that the military might have missed back in 1947 when they supposedly recovered wreckage from the site we would soon tread upon. I also thought about the possibility of running across rattlesnakes or maybe scorpions during our trek. Joe [Jordan] echoed this concern several times, warning us to be very careful about rattlers.
I hooked up with Joe Jordan who told me that David Flynn and his team were preparing to go and I got real excited. Joe told me that the site we were going to visit was not the site that most people visit when they come to Roswell. He told me that there are actually four sites but I can't recount whether the one we would soon visit was included in that number or not. So, Joe and I hopped in the Explorer and started to follow Dave and his crew. We drove for a few miles until we found a dirt road to turn onto, following Dave [Flynn] and his GPS crew. The road was quite dusty and I'm sure that the air filter of the rented SUV was getting pretty dirty.

We drove for quite a distance in the desert. Man, it was so beautiful out there. To quote Buzz Aldren from Apollo 11 when he described the moonscape, "magnificent desolation." We came to a fork in the road and Dave thought that we should stop and get our bearings. The picture below is of Dave checking the GPS unit along with Joe Jordan from CE-4 Research Group.

After a lot of driving on a lot of bumpy and rocky roads we finally got as close to the crash site as we could get by driving. We would have to hike in the rest of the way. I have to say that our hike was a rigorous one. It probably would have been easier had we done it in early spring or late fall when temperatures are much lower, but we were there in July and nothing was going to stop us from finding our goal.

We looked around for any identifying landmarks. Believe me, there were very few. In the desert we were in everything looked the same and it would have been easy for someone to get lost if they weren't adept at directions. There was one identifying mark though; a place called Lewis Well which can be seen in the background of the following picture.

After a cursory sweep of the area we decided to get to the Spiritual matters that we came to perform. We took very few pictures of this event because we all participated in the matter at hand. After Joe set up the video camera we all stood side by side, all in one accord. I started with a prayer that the Lord had given me the night before. We thought it very important that we claim the land for Yeshua and His Kingdom. Here is a text copy of the prayer:
Bless this land Lord. Turn it again unto thyself. Turn around all evil perpetuated by this place and events that happened here, and bring about good. Sanctify this land so that only Your Name will be magnified by its remembrance.
For many years this place has been associated as 1947. We proclaim it to be a symbol of 1948, which is when your prophetic time clock started again ticking. We proclaim it as a sign of the coming of the Son of Man.
We pray for a renewal for Roswell and all the surrounding area. We pray for changed hearts and renewed minds. In the Name of Yeshua we claim Roswell for you. We place your banner over her residents. We claim her elected officials for you. We claim that her attraction toward Babylon will become an abhorrence of evil. We claim her occult businesses for you, that they may turn and become outlets of Holiness.
We stand here on this land in recognition that when two or more are gathered in your name, you are with us. We also recall your promise, that whenever we ask our Father anything in Your Name, we can rest assured that that purpose will become a realityAMEN
After the prayer Joe Jordan read from the book of Psalms; the twenty third psalm to be exact. We thought that this psalm would be a fitting one to read over a place who's legacy has brought about so much spiritual strife. Joe then read the communion account in the Gospel of Luke and we shared communion; citing the blessings in both Hebrew and English. After that, Joe recited a benediction in Hebrew and he blew the Shofar to seal what we had done. Before he blew the Shofar though I felt that I should recount for those watching the video, the story of Joshua and the Israelites marching around the city of Jericho. It was a powerful time. After Joe finished blowing the Shofar, David Flynn came over to me and showed me that the sound of the horn caused the hairs on his arms to stand on end. We had definitely made an impact in the Spiritual realm. Joe even sprinkled anointing oil on the ground to consecrate it for Yeshua.

After the ceremonies everyone walked around and looked for artifacts of a crash and for any geologic anomalies that might have been made from a crash. Aside from what looked like a long scrape in the ground we came to the conclusion that after the crash the Army probably did a thorough check for materials.
