A fascinating and still unsolved UFO case that I posted on ATS...

CASE SUMMARY: On the night of April 18, 1962 there was a mass sighting of a Very bright and strange UFO that flew over more than ten states and was seen in the sky by thousands of people as it made it's way across North America. The unidentified flying object was first noticed by witnesses in Oneida and Cuba New York and was heading in a westerly direction. Air Defense Command was alerted by NORAD who was tracking the object for 32 minutes on radar as it moved west and Jet fighters from at least two locations were scrambled to investigate. Sighting reports from witnesses who saw the object in Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and California evidently confirmed the UFO had indeed traveled towards the west coast.

In Eureka, Utah witnesses reported the bright UFO triggered photocells causing street lights to shut off and some observers claimed the object "arched over" and crashed just west of town which caused a service disruption at a nearby power plant. A local sheriff said he saw the lights of retail stores go out or became dark as if there was a power outage and according to reports the Air Force later admitted there was a problem at the power plant while something "mysterious", possibly a meteor had landed. Search parties under the watchful eye of the military attempted to locate any remains of the object but nothing was found and interestingly some witnesses said the UFO didn't crash and claimed they saw it land and take off again.

Exactly what happened in Utah is unknown but the object was seen as far west as Reno, Nevada and California and sighting reports from there now claimed the object was traveling from the west towards the east. Apparently the UFO had changed direction and then turned south towards Las Vegas and eventually disappeared from Nellis AFB radar at 10,000 feet over the Mesquite Range of Nevada where it reportedly exploded.

Famous Ufo Witness Announces 40Th Anniversary Event

Just in time for Alien Abduction Day, Travis Walton, a logger who's coworkers saw him get blasted by a UFO before going missing for five days in 1975, has announced details of a 40th anniversary event that includes a visit to the site where the UFO was seen on the same day and at the same time it all took place 40 years ago.

In case you did not know, today is Alien Abduction Day, also known as Extraterrestrial Abduction Day. As we wrote about in 2012, the origins of the holiday is unknown, but it now has its own Wikipedia entry.

So what better day to announce details about a unique and rare opportunity regarding perhaps the most famous alien abduction event ever. According to the website, the public is invited to "Join Travis Walton on a guided walking tour of the actual site where he encountered a burning fire in the sky and was taken aboard a spacecraft of unknown origin. As twilight approaches, you will be led through the forest while Travis takes you step-by-step through his harrowing experience."

Walton's harrowing experience made headlines when he went missing. After seeing Walton zapped, his coworkers took off, assuming he was dead. They returned soon after, but the UFO and Walton were gone. They raced to report Walton's disappearance to the police, but the police had a hard time believing their friend was attacked by a UFO. A massive man hunt was mounted, but as time when on, authorities began suspecting that Walton's friends must have killed Walton and concocted a wild story about a UFO taking him away.

Eventually, Walton returned. He thought he had been gone only a few hours, but it turned out to be five days. Walton remembered seeing the UFO before it zapped him. He then didn't remember anything until being dropped off on the side of the street and seeing the UFO flying off in the night sky above him.

Later, under regression, he remembered strange events taking place onboard some sort of apparent spacecraft.

The 1993 movie "Fire in the Sky", was based on Walton's experiences, and portrayed the events fairly accurately, except for what Walton remembers happening under regression. The movie starred D.B. Sweeney, James Garner and Robert Patrick.

The movie is often criticized for not staying true to the Walton's experience when it comes to what Walton remembered under regression. However, Tracy Torme, singer Mel Torme's son, who is a filmmaker and wrote the script for "Fire in the Sky", will be giving a lecture at an anniversary event being held after the UFO site tour to explain why the producers asked him to make the changes.

Torme's talk will be part of the Skyfire Summitt, which will be held in Heber/Overgaard, Arizona, near the location where the UFO was seen on November 5, 1975. The event will begin the day after the UFO site tour, running from November 6 - 8, 2015, and will include lectures from Walton and UFO researchers, and a panel with Walton and some of the men who witnessed his disappearance.

"Sir, I have read many of your reader's experiences. Because of your presentation, I have decided to come forward with a personal event that happened to me in 1987 while living in New Zealand. You have my permission to post this for your readers."

"One January morning, I set off on what should have been no more than a 3 hour drive to Auckland, NZ. I arrived at my destination feeling extremely tired and confused. When I went to the hotel front desk to check in, I was told that I had no room reservation. Then, after the desk clerk checked the records, I was stunned to learn that I had lost 5 days and had no idea where I had been."

"Luckily, there was a vacancy, so I checked in and went right to the room. After a quick shower and a bite to eat, I decided to grab a nap. I laid there wondering what had happened to me and that I may as well drive back home because I missed all of the appointments I had scheduled."

After a few days, though, I continued to experience extreme anxiety. I called my GP and was able to see him the next day. After several sessions with the therapist, who I confided in about the lost time, I was recommended to a psychologist who had dealt with this phenomena before."

Her nose, mouth, ears and hair looked human-like but her eyes were large and round with onyx black pupils. I suppose she could be termed as a 'humanoid'. Kelowna, B. C. Two UFOs - More Eyewitness To An Amazing Sky Event

Date: July 2, 2007

Time: Approx: 10:45 p.m.

Hey Brian, Ok, so like I said I would I've been watching the skies. Not last night but the night before, I saw something out of this world (no pun intended). It was about 10:45 p.m. at night and I saw two object in the sky just hovering. They weren't doing much, but something new with most sightings, they were different shaped objects. One was thin and longish, and the other was like a triangular shape.

They kept hovering there, so I got up quickly to run and grab my camera but the next thing I know I hear a smallest bang, almost like a gun, and the longish one starts to hurtle towards earth on fire making a deep sound, kind of like a nuclear generator bass kind of sound. I'm thinking to myself what the hell!

I watched the object as it disappeared at low altitude behind a small hill between my neighborhood and the lake. I looked up and I saw the triangular object make a small circle, come a little lower and then I see it start to hurdle towards the sky at a fast rate, and the long one reappears from behind the hill, there was no more fire, and ascending at break neck speed and when it gets a little higher, I saw it literally shoot something at the other object and then a very loud bang and the triangular one was no longer visible.

The long shaped one started to what looked like it was searching the sky. It was going north, then south, then east and west, very quickly, almost like a hummingbird when it goes side to side. Then the object disappeared and I suppose it's departure broke the sound barrier immediately because I heard that sonic boom when the barrier is broken.

Anyways, like I said. This seems ludicrous, and after my many years of watching the skies, I finally saw what seemed like two E.T.s duking it out. The thing I find interesting about this sighting though, is that the objects were not glowing eerily like most UFO sightings refer to.

It makes the sighting almost that much more "real" if you know what I mean.

Message: I don't know what happened last night but It was the most frightening, incredible, and down right terrifying thing I have ever seen! I was walking my dog along the Beach in Westbank, B.C. and minding my own business at close to 11:00 p.m. on the 2nd of July (yesterday) when I seen this really really, really big bright thingy that looked something like a, well, I don't know, but it didn't fit the usual description of a UFO round type of object.

It looked somewhat like a torpedo or something with wings, kind of like a fighter jet, screaming across the sky and downwards on fire. It crashed into the lake and there was a big splash, almost like a large, large plane. The sound was incredibly, loud and like a deep bass "womp, womp, womp" sound as it came down.

I ducked for cover thinking of a meteor or asteroid or something. I started to freak out and yell and as I was standing up, something came literally shooting back out of the water and I saw it start to hurtle towards a different looking object very high in the sky, which kind of looked like a cone of some sort.

I saw what looked like what you would see in a star wars movie for the bullets from the blaster. It was coming from the object that just was in the lake, and I heard a loud bang that knocked me off my feet. I looked up to see what the heck was going on and the cone shaped object was gone and the torpedo thing was just hovering. Moving from side to side looking almost confused and then a loud sonic boom and it was gone.

People came running out to me as I screamed loudly and people asked me what happened. What was I going to say, I just saw two UFOs? Not likely. What the heck could have this been?

Message: My name is (removed by Brian Vike). I saw something that almost seems like a dream. Last night at about 11:00 p.m. I was watching TV at home (I live in the Mission in Kelowna) and I just happened to catch a bright light through my window.

I didn't think much of it because our neighbors car always shines the lights in our house because of the make up of the drive-way. I continued to watch TV and I heard an extremely loud bang that scared the hell out of me. I ran to the window and looked around and I happened to catch a glimpse something in the sky hovering and moving side to side. Then I heard another really loud boom and it was gone. On Monday night I was sitting on my front steps talking to my friend on the phone and saw something strange in the sky as well. This also may confirm the stories that my friend read in Fridays paper. Please feel free to call me at my home so we can discuss this in better detail. Thank you for your time.

Brian Vike telephoned the witness on July 10, 2007 to see what other information I might be able to gather.

The witness told me she had arrived home from a friends place and noticed another friend had left a message for her to call. The lady took her telephone outside as she was returning the call, plus having a cigarette.

As the two friends talked on the phone the witness noticed a long cylinder shaped light. Her first thoughts were that she was just seeing an airplane, as she is close to where the flights fly directly overhead, but the woman went on to say, the object was a little odd looking as it wasn't exactly on the normal flight path. Plus there were not any of the normal NAV lights on this object.

The entire craft was fully lit up. After approximately 3 or 4 minutes of viewing time it was gone, the witness said it was like someone turned off the light switch. (we are not sure if the craft moved quickly away from it's location, or with the lights out and due to the darkness the object just wasn't visible).

The object was stationary and not a sound was heard coming from it. It also wasn't sitting at a high altitude, lower than a small Cessna would fly at. Rather low she mentioned and there were also no flashing or blinking lights on it at all.

The lady mentioned to her friend on the telephone that possibly she may have just been witness to a UFO sighting. Both kidded around about what was seen and talked for a while longer then hung up.

On July 6, 2007 the witness gets a phone call from the same friend informing her about an newspaper article on UFO sightings that was reported in the local Kelowna newspaper. (Kelowna Capital News). This is when the lady decided to write an email to me asking if I would telephone her.

"BRIAN VIKE'S - THE VIKE FACTOR:" A lady must have called the Kelowna Capital News to request my phone number as the witness called me up and explained what it was she witnessed over Okanagan Lake. The lady said she saw the same UFO twice over a weeks time period.

Date: July 2, 2007

Time: 2:00 a.m.

The first sighting of the craft was on Monday June 25, 2007 and again on the evening everyone else witnessed the unusual UFO event, which would have been July 2, 2007.

The witness said she was awake and got up at 2:00 a.m. and watched the craft for approximately one hour. The object was hovering, she said it did not move from it's position over top of the lake. There were a string of lights that went around the bottom part of the object and as she watched, the bottom lights would fade out and lights at the top of the craft came on, still appearing to circle the object. Also the top portion of the craft seemed to be lit up. The woman also stated that beams of light would shoot out from the top of the UFO and also from the bottom. Finally after roughly the hour had passed by, the craft shot up quickly and was gone and out of sight.

She reports that not a sound was heard coming from it. The lady lives on lake frontage and had an amazing view of the event. The object was low and again stationary over the water. (not touching the water at anytime) The witness said it appeared to be looking for something, or that is the impression she got from observing the event.

Did you see an unidentified flying object touch down on Okanagan Lake Monday evening? Well, apparently at least three of your neighbours did and they all managed to track down preeminent B.C. UFO researcher Brian Vike to report the phenomenon.

Late Monday evening Vike started receiving reports of an unidentifiable fireball hovering over the lake. "Everything seemed to look good and usually you can tell if it's a hoax or not," said Vike, who was furiously contacting local media for help by Tuesday morning.

Kelowna has been a hot spot for Vike who operates a UFO research organization, "THE VIKE FACTOR", out of his home in Houston, B.C. Back in 2003 two women reported an incredible alien encounter on a Kelowna street and it wound up among Vike's biggest cases.

The sighting was featured in a "CTV special" and even wound up on the "Montel Williams" show as fodder for a famous psychic. So, when three sightings were reported on the same night this week out of Kelowna, Vike figured it was worth some attention.

The first sighting was by a woman walking her dog in Westbank who noticed a fireball that appeared to dive into the lake and then return to the air. "This thing ended up coming back out of the water and started to hurl toward a different looking object very high in the sky, which is totally bizarre," said Vike.

An excerpt from the email she sent the UFO researcher shows just how upsetting the episode was for the pet owner.

"OK, I don't know what happened last night but it was the most frightening, incredible, and down right terrifying thing I have ever seen," she wrote. "I ducked for cover thinking of a meteor or asteroid or something. Apparently an airborne craft shook residents from their beds in the Kootenay town, prompting a hunt for UFOs on local radio and even in the newspapers, he said. But this week's incident in Kelowna has him unusually excited.

"They saw what appeared to be a Star Wars movie full of bullets and blasters, kind of thing and I've had reports from other areas similar to what they're talking about," he said.

A second report from the Mission area noted the image was accompanied by a sonic boom and yet another report has come in since then.

Local RCMP did not receive any unusual calls Monday night, to the best of the media spokesperson's knowledge. And nothing usual appeared on Navigation Canada's radar. The air traffic control tower at Kelowna International Airport closed just shortly before the sightings occurred.

"I checked with the area control center. Now they only have radar for planes' transponders and so if it was a UFO it didn't have a transponder on. So no, we have no reports of any unusual aircraft in the area," said Ron Singer, Navigation Canada communications.

THE BRITS RECENTLY RELEASED their fifth batch of records about unidentified flying objects. The Ministry of Defence and The National Archives have released the files as part of a project to open the files up to a broader audience.

THIS RELEASE IS THE LARGEST SO FAR, with more than 6,000 pages of material from 1994 to 2000.

THE FILES INCLUDE:

- A SIGHTING BY A MAN IN BIRMINGHAM, England, in March 1997. He said he came home from work at 4 a.m. to see a large blue triangle-shaped craft hovering over his back garden. It "shot off and disappeared" after about three minutes, the report said, leaving behind a "silky-white substance on the treetops, some of which he saved in a jar. The documents did not say what happened to the jar and its contents.

- ONE REPORT, FROM JANUARY 1997, details a man driving home through south Wales one night when he saw a 'tube of light' coming down from the sky, which at first seemed like a "massive star" coming toward him. The man's mobile phone and car radio failed (classic symptoms!), and the man got out of his car and was able to walk through the light. When he re-entered his car he started feeling sick, and later developed a skin condition.

- ANOTHER REPORT TALKS ABOUT A GROUP OF PEOPLE, in August 1997, who saw, from their fishing trawler in the North Sea, a round, flat, shiny object hover in the sky. The witnesses saw it both with the naked eye and through binoculars. The witnesses, the report says, were "very skeptical of UFOs"." They followed the UFO on radar for several seconds before it completely vanished, the report said.

- COPS IN BOSTON, ENGLAND, AND SKEGNESS, on England's east coast, witnessed a UFO on video at the same time that the Royal Air Force (RAF) detected an "unidentified blip" on their radar. In the 1966 sighting, officers saw "strange rotating red, blue, green and white flashing lights in the sky," the report said. Another ship in a bay near Boston, also saw the lights, at the same time the RAF air defense radars picked up the blip. Press coverage of the incident led the RAF to look into the lights, which they identified as stars and bright planets. The radar blip, authorities said, were due to a "permanent echo" created by a nearby church spire.

- THE RELEASE ALSO CONTAINS SEVERAL INCIDENTS involving UFOs and aircraft, like the near-miss that happened in January 1995 when a British Airways Boeing 737 was approaching Manchester airport. We are now in the era of "big data," which is changing the landscape not only of state surveillance but also science and health. Big computing power is enabling not only the gathering and storage but also the synthesis of exponentially greater amounts of information from scientific studies and clinical trials than ever before. In the halls of national research institutions, these new developments are being lauded (rightly) as heralding a new era of truly unprecedented scientific discovery.

Arguably, science itself is about to undergo a singularity, because the next step beyond big data collection is automating the very conduct of research to gather that data.

We all know how robots have or will soon take boring and dangerous tasks like vacuuming our floors or fighting our wars out of human hands. But no one thinks about the infinitely tedious task that is doing good science. In not too long, we will have the ability to automate not only the gathering and interpretation of information but also the very posing of research questions, and one of the first things we will teach intelligent computers to do is to ask questions in a scientific fashion-that is, form hypotheses based on prior findings, and then design and perhaps even (with the help of robots) conduct experiments to test them.

Whether artificial intelligence will ever become sentient (let alone spiritual) as Ray Kurzweil anticipates, AI will nevertheless be able to carry on the scientific endeavor increasingly independently, on a massive scale, fast, and without human biases and egos. This, whether we like it or not, will be truly objective science, which has never quite existed in the past even if it has always been the goal.

SPACE PROBES MULTIPLYING LIKE RABBITS

As long as we touch wood, Carl Sagan-fashion, and add "If we do not destroy ourselves," the ability to automate science and deal with exponentially greater quantities of data will revolutionize our understanding of the natural world. Progress in medical research and many many other fields will make leaps and bounds, and it will ultimately revolutionize the exploration of space.

Because remember that, along with the big data and AI revolutions, we are also at the birth of the 3-D printing revolution. The use of local resources to create copies of machines and other supplies transmitted through space as simple information is going to make human life and work on the Moon and Mars and the asteroid belt feasible; and coupling a 3-D printer to a smart probe or drone will at last give us exactly what Von Neumann envisioned as the tool any advanced civilization will use to explore beyond its solar system.

Once a 3-D printer prints out another 3-D printer, the robot reproductive system is a reality. Interstellar probes thus equipped can replicate themselves at their destination and thus propogate from planet to planet, star system to star system, completely autonomously. Because they can perpetually repair themselves and reproduce, such probes would have limitless durability, and this would give them limitless patience. And what would limit them in the amount of reproduction that they do? Imagine: A thousand self-replicating probes are dispatched to the nearest star systems, where they copy themselves and establish a presence on every planet, if only to observe the geology and meteorology so long as nothing more interesting is going on, and send copies of themselves to further star systems, and so on. When they encounter really interesting stuff, like life or another intelligent species, they would swarm such a world with probes and dig in (quietly) for the long haul.

Such probes would have a built-in motive for curiosity and ability not merely to observe and record but to behave like experimenters: to generate their own hypotheses, design experiments to test them, and tediously replicate and re-replicate their findings alone or collaboratively, to constantly nuance and update their deepening understanding of their subject species. Such probes will not be passive, in other words, but will also interact in a very precise, deliberate, controlled fashion, and repeat these interactions obsessively in the same and different conditions, tirelessly, again and again and again, building up conclusions of high confidence. They will be more than "probes" as we usually think of them, but full, autonomous science platforms, continuously sharing data among themselves and constantly or periodically relaying that information to each other and back home for storage and future use by the civilization that built them (or their robot protectors).

REVISITING THE ETH

Coupling the emerging reality of the Von Neumann probe with an expanding sense of just how "big" data could possibly get enables us to re-think some of the criticisms that have been leveled at the extraterrestrial hypothesis (ETH) in years past, because some are based on assumptions about the manner, scope, and aims of ET data collection that strike me as increasingly questionable.

Jacques Vallee was among the first ufologists to question the ETH. Vallee was in on the ground floor of the Internet and has been a technological as well as Fortean visionary throughout his career, and his argument against the ETH as an explanation for the full gamut of UFO contact experiences throughout history remains powerful and persuasive. I have come around to thinking he's right-there's a lot more to the UFO story (especially abductions and flying saucers) than flesh-and-blood aliens traveling across space to visit us. However, one of the five pillars of his argument-that the estimated millions of "landings" just in human history vastly exceeds what would be needed for a survey of our planet and civilization-misses what I suspect would be the very nature of any extraterrestrial "agenda" that was capable of populating space with swarms of robots and gathering and using big data over the long term.

In his 1989 paper "Five Arguments Against the Extraterrestrial Origin of Unidentified Flying Objects," Vallee writes:

Furthermore, we have been broadcasting information on all aspects of our various cultures in the form of radio for most of this century and in the form of television for the last 30 years, so that most of the parameters about our planet and our civilization can readily be acquired by unobtrusive, remote technical means. The collecting of physical samples would require landing but it could also be accomplished unobtrusively with a few carefully targeted missions of the type of our own Viking experiments on Mars. All these considerations appear to contradict the ETH.

Granted, it was 1989 when he wrote this. But besides predating the era of big data, this notion that ET space exploration would be satisfied with purely observational, "thin-slicing" data collection misses a whole side of science: experimentation and replication of findings. Remote, unobtrusive observation and periodic visits to collect samples would not remotely satisfy the scope of a full scientific research program on a potentially interesting planet such as our own. With massive data-gathering, storage, and synthesis capability wedded to machine self-replication, an "interesting" world such as ours could potentially have been swarmed with a hundred or a million probes, not only quietly observing and recording but also overtly interacting with the local flora and fauna for the purposes of experimentation and hypothesis-testing over the full course of its history.

CONTROL SYSTEMS VS PSYCH EXPERIMENTS

One of Vallee's most far-reaching insights about UFO contact is that there is a regularity to it, a kind of 'irregular regularity' reminiscent of a reinforcement schedule in behavioral research. This insight supported his theory that UFOs may be some sort of control mechanism. The question is, control for what purpose? That UFO encounters represent an effort to shape our evolution is a popular view, and it could well be true in some cases. Yet the simple, scientific collection of behavioral data is another possibility that, despite what Vallee argued, is not at all inconsistent with either the the absurd, symbolic nature of UFO encounters or with their sheer number and repetition throughout recorded time.

First-and here I'm sure Vallee would agree-UFO encounters of all kinds (not just alien encounters or abduction experiences) not only resemble Zen koans but also resemble the contrived, surreal, occasionally uncanny situations that experiment participants find themselves in in any campus psychology laboratory. Even when they are aware they are part of an experiment, volunteers are generally deceived or not given full information about the purpose of the experiment. Experiments sometimes involve other "participants" who are actually confederates behaving in a realistic but specified manner in order to provoke some kind of response or decision on the part of the volunteer. Any experiment will also include at least two groups differing on a single parameter-a control and an experimental condition, in other words. Generally a single study will be part of a series, a whole research program, in which multiple experiments test numerous variations on a theme, in order to increasingly refine our understanding of a given psychological process.

Crucially, one of the keys to obtaining reliable, predictable data in psychology as in any other field of science is obtaining a large enough sample size. Thus, you recruit as many different volunteers as your grant money affords, and you run the experiment enough times that even a small behavioral difference between the conditions will achieve statistical significance and thus pass muster as a robust finding. Then, there is the need to repeat the experiment across different laboratories and replicate the finding so everyone can really trust it.

Repeatability of findings happens to be a huge problem across our sciences these days, since perverse reward incentives (tenure and grant competition, etc.) and other problems such as fraud are leading to the publication of data that are not as robust as they seem at first glance. But imagine those perverse incentives weren't there. Imagine you were a "science machine" with all the time in the world and thus infinite patience, and with no pressure to publish or obtain tenure with startling findings, and your only goal was to acquire a truly "thick" understanding of how humans behave and react to specific circumstances with extraordinary confidence. Part of this imperative would include grasping that the species being studied is highly complex, that it is culturally and socially and psychologically adaptable and even biologically still evolving (and that your own actions may contribute, at least in a small way, to that evolution).

It would mean, I think, that you would endlessly devise new experiments to test new and different emerging hypothesis, run those experiments with large enough numbers of humans that your findings would be robust (but not so many that you ended up interfering in a significant way with the species as a whole); and it would mean that you would need to re-run the various experiments again and again and again, ceaselessly, throughout history. Many, many "landings," in other words. As a science machine, you would be doing a lot of science, again and again, interacting just enough to test hypotheses in large enough samples, but not betraying your true purposes to the "volunteers."

Thin Slicing vs. Deep Anthropology

As far-thinking as Vallee was (and is), he formulated his critique of the ETH at the toddler-hood of computer technology, so may have tended to think of the limits of information in human-experience rather than computer-experience terms-in other words, of isolated visits to reconnoiter and gather samples and "report back" somewhere. Carl Sagan envisioned extraterrestrial contact with earth in similar terms-periodic visits (every 10,000 years or so, he suggested). But when science can be undertaken completely by locally-based machines with storage capacities (locally or remotely) that vastly exceed even the computers of our NSA-and that are coordinated, unbiased, totally patient because they have nothing else to do and nowhere else to be, and moreover can collaborate in large numbers because they can reproduce themselves-then a level of science could probably be achieved that would be hard for any human to fathom.

One might ask why an extraterrestrial civilization would want to engage in such "deep anthropology," but political and scientific realities of our own time make the answer pretty evident. Our scientific, technological society is already built on centuries of "basic" science-that is, science undertaken for its own sake, usually without any direct or foreseeable payoff in application. Knowing the mating habits of deep-sea protozoa may seem useless to most people (including many taxpayers who do not understand the importance of this kind of science), but scientists and smart policymakers who fund the science know that these details are all part of a big puzzle and any bit of information may ultimately pay off in unforeseen ways, years or decades or centuries down the long road. Thus, are our basic curiosity about the universe, and our social ability to invest resources in that curiosity, adaptive.

More basically, knowledge is power (or at least, security). It enables prediction and control. If money were no object, there is certainly no limit to the degree of prediction and control an intelligence agency like our NSA would like to achieve over even the remotest long-term threats to a nation's security-for obvious reasons. As much as we may balk at the kind of surveillance our spying programs engage in, if it could be shown (and surely they will attempt to do so) that another 9/11 would be averted through such deep, extensive data collection, then some people would have no problem with the loss of privacy entailed. Likewise there is no limit to the degree of prediction and control-over illness, for example-that researchers at NIH would like to attain, given unlimited funds. If a cure for cancer can come of vast linkages of medical records and trial data, who will dispute such a project?

We thus need not even invoke any "anthopocentric" motive of pure curiosity to see why an alien intelligence or civilization will, when capable of "learning all that is knowable" inexpensively and in an automated fashion, embark on such a project. Such a civilization will have gotten to where it is through the same path we did-through science. When the kinds of constraints we now still face, in terms of funding and resources and the limits of human bias and the limits of processing power and storage, are overcome through advanced artificial intelligence and robotics, such a species/civilization will be in a position to undertake knowledge acquisition of mind-boggling scope and resolution, and it will have no reason not to.

That civilization will send its eyes and ears and roving brains outward, everywhere settling in for the long duration, in large semi-coordinated numbers, learning all that is learnable over the whole history of every star and moon and planet, about its geology and weather and even its primitive flora and fauna (if any)-because who knows what will happen in a million or a billion years? Who knows where life will emerge from primordial muck? Who knows what tree-dwelling mammal might become a spacefaring, militaristic civilization down the long road, and thus be worth settling in with and watching closely and learning how to predict and control should that species ever pose a threat to its security?
