Mysterious Lights Seen Over Liberty County

Many have observed several UFOS which they described as red fire balls hovering over Daisetta, Texas around 8:27 in the evening on March 23. A Texan resident called the police to report these machines flying above the city and two sheriff deputies of Liberty County went on the area of the incident just a couple of minutes after the report. Liberty County Sheriff office spokesperson Ken Defoor said in an emailed statement that the number or citizens on the scene that saw the same sightings reached at least 10 to 12. He added that the flying objects became invisible possibly after they went behind the clouds. The UFOs were flying in a southwest direction at an altitude of approximately 3,000 feet. Defoor said that UFO National Reporting Center in Spokane, Washington should be reached if no legal agency gathered information on these reported sightings. The sheriff's office urged people seeing the same objects to immediately report to their department. It reached several agencies such as the National Weather Bureau, the Houston Office of the Federal Aviation Agency and others to have their views on the UFOs. However, none of the agencies provides explanations about the reported lights. Whether or such lights were UFOs, the report remains a mystery as of the moment.

Back again after an intense week of working on my Hynek book... writing about the first time the good Doctor actually went out in the field to investigate a UFO incident, and it's a pretty cool story.

But in the midst of my busy week I got a call from Vxxxx, my MUFON State Director, who said, "Mark, I have a proposition for you." She explained that a news crew from CNN was going to come out to her and her husband's isolated desert bunker house in the middle of nowheresville, Arizona, to get some video of her husband training fresh-faced new MUFON Field Investigators. The catch was that Jxx, the new MUFON President, who set up the shoot, wanted the fresh-faced recruits to be "young." Meaning just out of diapers.

Naturally, Vxxxx thought of me first.

What could I say? I was flattered, of course, but I burst out laughing and said, "But Vxxxx... I'm not young (I'm not sure which was more difficult: admitting I'm not young or pronouncing "Vxxxx"). She hesitated for a moment, then said, "Well, how old are you? Fifty-three," came the reply.

Vxxxx gasped. "What? You're fifty-three? I thought you were thirty!"

Then came my turn to gasp. "Thirty! I thought you were going to guess that I was twenty!"

Okay, that last part didn't really happen. I was happy with thirty and I told her so. But she wasn't in the mood. She was sorely disappointed that I couldn't be part of the TV shoot. "Here I was all set to pay your way to fly out here to Arizona to be in the segment! Now I have to keep looking..."

Sharp readers will notice a couple problems with this scenario. One: Why does the Wisconsin State Director live in a bunker in the Arizona desert? I'm still trying to figure that one out. Two: Why does a 53 year-old seem like a youngster in the ranks of MUFON? I don't know, but you can be damn sure I'm going to use it to my advantage from here on out. Three: Young people watch CNN?

It is difficult to say for sure but nonetheless it remains an interesting sighting.Sighting number 6 jumps us forward slightly in history to 1803, the location is a stretch of beach north of Tokyo Japan. This is a rather back to front UFO sighting report as the unknown object in question is not witnessed in the sky but emerging from the sea, also the UFO isn't the main point of this sighting, it is the crafts occupant, a woman. Apparently a strange, round craft washed ashore on the beach one day and when locals investigated (presumably fishermen) they found a young beautiful woman inside. This woman spoke a language the locals couldn't understand and the inside of the craft was covered in symbols which also puzzled them. Weirder still, as if the event itself wasn't weird enough, this woman was carrying a rectangular box that she didn't want anyone to touch! This case is known in Japan as the "legend of the hollow ship".Sighting number 5 brings us even closer to modern times and was reported in 1950 by a terrified United States Air Force officer working at the White Sands test range in the New Mexico desert. This officer and sergeant Jonathan Louette were tasked with taking a jeep out onto the vast missile range and clearing up any debris and burnt out missile shells. Now comes the part most of you won't believe, after driving down the range a few miles they stopped the jeep and both got out, splitting up to search more ground among the endless sand dunes, the officer heard sudden screaming coming from the area he knew the sergeant was in. He sprinted towards the screaming and when he reached the top of a dune he witnessed a Disc shaped craft, low to the ground, reaching down from the bottom of this Disc was a long tentacle type appendage which was wrapped around the sergeant! Sound unbelievable? That's what the officers bosses thought when he got back to base and reported it, he was charged with murder and held until a few days later when sergeant Jonathan Louette's body turned up 20 miles down the range, mutilated with strange precise cutting the officer couldn't possibly have carried out, he was cleared of the murder charge.Case number 4 comes to us from many miles above the earth, the witnesses were Alan Bean, Jack Lousma and Owen Garriott, all astronauts carrying out various experiments inside the NASA Skylab 3 craft. The three astronauts witnessed a red pulsing object outside their space craft, they watched it for 10 minutes and even took some pictures of it. Being a clever astronaut type, Owen Garriott was able to estimate the size of the object, he worked this out by timing the difference between his own craft (Skylab 3) passing into the earths shadow and the following UFO passing into the shadow after them. This told him the UFO was 25 miles away and 800 feet in diameter! Which was far larger than anything NASA had up there, the Skylab 3 itself was only 150 feet long.Sighting case number 3 comes from the freezing wastelands of the Yukon in 1996, the first sighting of this unknown craft happened at 8.30 pm beside Fox Lake. 6 witnesses reported seeing a massive UFO moving slowly and quietly across the frozen lake, they described it as being smooth, round and very large. About 30 minutes later and North of Fox Lake multiple witnesses from the village of Pelly Crossing saw the same UFO, shortly after this and to the south in the neighbouring village of Carmacks, four guys in a truck and five family members, looking out their front window also witnessed this massive UFO. This case has been investigated many times from different angles by different people but remains firmly unexplained.Sighting number 2 happened in 1967 above Malmstrom Air Force Base in Montana. Captain Robert Salas was on duty that night and received a call from the Guard post commander who reported that some of his guards had been seeing strange lights flying above the base in unorthodox patterns. Robert didn't think to much of it the first time but the guard commander called back some minutes later in a very excited state, shouting into the phone! He told Robert Salas (in no uncertain terms) that there was a large red glowing sphere floating outside the base's front gate. Robert quickly ordered him to mobilise his guards to secure the perimeter while he phoned to inform the next person up the ladder what was going on, it was then that something even stranger happened, the warning lights in the missile control room started going of and the nuclear missiles at the base shut one after another to a state where they couldn't be launched. Naturally the military carried out investigations into why the missiles shut down but were unable to find out why.And last but not least sighting case number 1 happened in December of 1980 in Rendlesham forest, specifically near two RAF bases, RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge. Both these bases were at that time on loan to the United States Airforce. At 3 am a U.S. Air Force guard patrol witnessed strange lights zipping about above the trees close to the Bentwaters base, 3 soldiers were sent to this wooded area to investigate and as they cautiously approached through the trees they saw a burning orange light near the forest floor. The leader of the 3, sergeant Jim Penniston, later reported that he got close enough to see an object inside the orange light, suddenly there was a brilliant flash of light and the object disappeared. The very next night strange lights were again observed by the base's on duty staff and the base commander, lieutenant colonel Charles Halt, decided to lead a patrol back to the forest area to investigate further. What Charles and members of his patrol witnessed gliding through the dark woods was an eye shaped craft which was dripping what appeared to be molten metal! naturally all the patrol members were mesmerised by this floating - apparently lava dripping oddity so they tried to get closer to it, to find out exactly what it was. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately) the object moved away from them and out of the trees altogether into a nearby field, where, after floating for another few minutes it silently explodes into 5 smaller white circles of light which disappeared. At this point some of the patrol team noticed more lights in the sky, one of which flew to a direct stop above the patrol and shone a focused beam down to the ground right beside the patrol. King Island Uap Reports Around The Time Of Valentich Disappearance

Readers of this blog will be aware that I am a keen supporter of the concept of locating original documentation on events. Readers will also be aware that I have been following the trail of material on the Frederick Valentich disappearance of 1978. So far we have:

1. Access to the two official Australian government files on this incident. (To read my earlier posts on the contents of these files click here and here.)

2. Reports on UAP from Victoria, Tasmania and Bass Strait between the 18th and 23rd October 1978 (Valentich disappeared on 21st October 1978.) To read these reports, and my analysis of them, click here.

One of the additional mysteries of the Valentich incident, is the number of UAP reports which came from King Island in 1978. King Island (click here for map) was the destination which Valentich recorded on his flight plan. I am therefore very thankful to Keith Roberts of the Tasmanian UFO Investigation Centre (click here to go to their website - well worth a look) for taking the time to go through their files, and compile a listing of UAP reports for 1978, from King Island. We share these reports below, for your perusal.

1. January. Egg Lagoon. 0200hrs.

Witness up early to attend to children. Noticed low to the north, a fire coloured sphere. The sphere was estimated at 2m diameter and some 3m above the ground. It was situated 300-400m distant over open paddocks. The sphere remained in the same location as the witness viewed it for about 15 minutes before the witness returned to bed. No fires or burn offs were known to have occurred in the area at the time. [TUFOIC sighting form and interview. Unidentified.]

2. July. Currie. Night.

A slow moving object with light, followed a vehicle down North Road to Currie. It then disappeared towards the nearby lighthouse. Other sightings reported in Currie that night. Up north, witnesses saw a strange light pass over their house. On going out to investigate, the light had disappeared. [King Island News 20/9/78. Anonymous letter to editor.] No follow up with witnesses possible.

3. 24 August Saguenay Rock and Cape Wickham. 2100-2130hrs.

Fishermen report flare like lights, including a large green light off Cape Wickham. Whilst investigating, the Police witness what looked like six hand flares 3km off shore. The flares came on after the blue flashing Police light was turned on. An area search by sea and air the next day, failed to locate any vessel in trouble. No ships were unaccounted for. A pilot landing at 2100hrs reported a meteorite disintegrating into sparks. [Burnie Advocate 25/8/78.]

4. Early September. New Year Island. Night.

Lights and flares reported from area. [Verbal, probably from King Island News.]

5. 12 September. Cam Creek. Night.

Large oval light noted. Lights up the area like daylight. [King Island News 20/9/78. Anonymous letter to editor.] No follow up possible.

6. 20 September. Reekara. 2130hrs.

Bright white, oval shape, seem by three witnesses following a shooting trip. They followed the light as they headed south towards Currie. They described the light as 10 times the size of a star. It looked to go out of sight behind a hill to the south-west. It was briefly seen again as a weak light in the distance towards the ocean. The event lasted about 15 minutes. A Nursing Sister reported to Paul Norman [VUFORS] she had also seen a bright light (the same light?) crossing the sky. VUFORS followed up but were unable to obtain any more information. [King Island News 27/9/78. TUFOIC sighting form and contact] Unidentified.

7. Early October. Currie? Night.

King Island News receives report of more lights seen. Passed on witness contact some months later to TUFOIC. TUFOIC unable to locate witness, who, it appears, had moved from King Island.

8. 21 October. Currie. 1400hrs.

Report of witness sunbathing when something sighted high overhead. TUFOIC obtained sighting form with information on the event. Description given as twice the size of a small aircraft (not a golf ball) Paul Norman (VUFORS) interviewed the witness and gave an estimate of the elevation around 1500m. The initial cloud from which the object emerged was almost overhead. The round white shape moved at first to the west, then headed back towards the east in the west-south-west sky, at an elevation of 70 degrees. The movement was slow, described as slower than a light aircraft. The witness watched for about 10 minutes before having to leave and did not observe the "shape" again. The weather was noted as clear. [King island News. TUFOIC sighting form. VUFORS interview.]
