Another great pleasure is the discovery that scholars and scientists are extraordinarily generous with their time.

When I sat down to write the current Junior Skeptic, "Alien Invaders!" I was reminded of something that had long bugged me: is anyone concerned that our spacecraft might carry microbes that could contaminate other worlds? After all, bacteria are tough little buggers. And-consider "The War of the Worlds" as a cautionary tale. What if returning spacecraft carried dangerous microbes back to Earth? Could alien bacteria devastate our own planetary ecosystem, as H. G. Wells imagined terrestrial bacteria annihilating his Martians?

Turns out that there are people whose job it is to worry about those hypothetical contamination dangers-and to work to prevent them. With some pointers from Bad Astronomy's Phil Plait and the Planetary Society's Emily Lakdawalla, I soon learned that this is an entire field that dates back to the first tentative human steps beyond the Earth.

Planetary Protection

The work of preventing or minimizing contamination between bodies in space is called "planetary protection." With the launch of "Sputnik I" and "II" in October and November of 1957, it became clear immediately to everyone that the Space Age was going to unfold in a hurry. Scientists realized that the nationalistic need to rush into space could badly conflict with the scientific point of going there. If human actions permanently altered the environments we were visiting through the introduction of microbes, exotic gases, or radioactivity, how could we study those environments? We wouldn't know what was natural, and what was artificial. And, after all, pristine environments are only pristine once. We had to get it right the first time.

All the same, given Cold War antagonisms, it's astonishing to me that the major players in the space race-and soon most of the nations of the Earth-agreed very quickly that space exploration should be conducted in such a way as to minimize environmental damage. This widely-shared concern did not reflect any soft-hearted green ideal, but pure scientific pragmatism. Scientific committees, international treaties, and offices within NASA and other space agencies quickly formed to work out protocols for what came to be called planetary protection. Should spacecraft be sterilized? How sterile is sterile? How do you sterilize the hidden surfaces of the screws holding delicate sensors in place? What about spacecraft that merely pass "near" a planet? Should all bodies be protected, or just the ones where life might have (or gain) a toehold? The ideal is simple, but the details are complex.

Today, NASA has an Office of Planetary Protection to ensure compliance with planetary protection requirements-which is mandatory for every NASA mission design.

The person in charge of that work-NASA's Planetary Protection Officer-is Dr. Catharine "Cassie" Conley. Dr. Conley was kind enough to take time from her schedule to help me with my fact-finding for "Junior Skeptic." I asked her permission to share her answers here in greater length, with the understanding that I emphasize that this was an informal email exchange. My thanks once again to Dr. Conley for sharing her time and expertise.

JUNIOR SKEPTIC: Do you think there ought to be an ethical component to Planetary Protection? Ought we to care about pristine extraterrestrial ecosystems for their own sake, in your opinion?

CONLEY: Planetary protection, as practiced over the past 50+ years, focuses explicitly on biology and the search for life, so in that context we don't have significant concerns about what happens in places where biology does not. However, the COSPAR Panel on Planetary Protection was instrumental in supporting the formation of another COSPAR panel, the Panel on Exploration, where those sorts of ethical considerations are addressed-as well as historical preservation concerns, like damage to Apollo sites through access by later missions. The hardware belongs to NASA, but what about the footprints?

I consider questions of environmental and historical preservation, including particularly the ethical context of human activities in space, to be very important-but formally they're not a part of biological planetary protection as practiced over the past 50+ years. We need park rangers as well as policemen, but it's not necessarily the right approach to have one organization doing both.

COSPAR, as background, is the venue where international planetary protection policy is set-the COmmittee on SPAce Research is a standing committee of the International Council for Science (ICSU) that advises the UN on scientific matters, just as national science academies advise national governments. COSPAR advises the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space, which is responsible for the 1967 Outer Space Treaty-the COSPAR Panel on Planetary Protection maintains policy supporting compliance with Article IX of the OST, which covers "harmful contamination" of planetary bodies and "adverse changes to the environment of the Earth" resulting from from the introduction of extraterrestrial matter.

The major national space agencies (e.g., NASA, ESA and affiliated national space agencies, RosKosmos, JAXA, ISRO) have agreed to follow COSPAR policy on international missions-this forms a framework under which all national space exploration is carried out using the same rules.

Article VI of the OST specifies that States Parties to the Treaty are responsible for the actions of non-governmental entities, so this means that commercial activities are already covered by national responsibilities.

Making sure that everybody in the various communities understands this, however, is a bit more of a challenge.

JUNIOR SKEPTIC: What role might Planetary Protection play in a manned mission to Mars? Does the concept become obsolete once humans step onto Mars?

CONLEY: Planetary protection is at least as important on human missions as it is on robotic missions, because in most cases we expect the astronauts to come back to Earth. This means that a lack of attention, if Mars does have life that can survive and spread on Earth, might result in significant "adverse changes to the environment of the Earth"-which would affect everyone on this planet. We've demonstrated the environmental consequences of moving invasive Earth species from one location to another, at least enough to realize that preventing Mars life from doing the same would be a very good idea

COSPAR established guidelines and policy for human missions to Mars in 2008, after a nearly decade-long process of meetings and scientific/engineering/technical discussion about what makes sense and what is possible to do. From the policy standpoint we have the same objectives-don't contaminate Mars and don't contaminate the Earth-but we'll have to go about meeting those in somewhat different ways. It's possible to engineer human support systems such that they release only limited biological contamination into the Mars environment-this is exactly what closed-loop life support systems try to do, because cost and mass are reduced the more the support systems can recycle materials internally.

The overall approach on planetary protection for human exploration of Mars has three prongs, if you will: minimize release of human-associated contamination to locations on Mars where Earth life could survive; minimize exposure of humans to uncharacterized Mars materials; and monitor human health and the microbial populations associated with humans and support systems, in order to identify any perturbations to those indicators that might suggest exposure of the astronauts to possible Mars life.

In support of this last activity, which we don't have to do for robotic missions, it will be very important to develop and test such microbial and human health monitoring systems on missions to other planetary bodies, such as the Moon and asteroids, where we don't expect to find local life-in that way, we can assemble a body of information about how humans interact with non-living planetary materials, such that if we document only similar/equivalent changes on Mars missions then we increase confidence that we can justify bringing even a sick astronaut back to Earth.

If an astronaut gets sick after exposure to Mars materials, and we don't have this supporting information, then it might be rather difficult to convince the rest of the planet to allow return-maritime law for centuries has allowed ports to tell a ship to go back to the previous port of origin.

JUNIOR SKEPTIC: Does NASA's Planetary Protection Office have a role to play in (or jurisdiction over?) private space travel?

CONLEY: Under the NASA Authorization Act, as amended, section 203(c)8 authorizes NASA to coordinate our activities with scientific and other activities carried out by public and private organizations. NASA is not a regulatory agency within the US government, but NASA does provide expert input to other regulatory agencies, for example the FAA launch certification process. What mechanisms the US could use to regulate activities that happen outside the Earth's atmosphere is still in work.

JUNIOR SKEPTIC: And this one, suggested by conversation with kids about this topic: Should we be scared about getting sick from dangerous germs from outer space?

CONLEY: We don't know whether living organisms exist anywhere else than the Earth. What we do know about Earth germs is that they generally infect only a small subset of organisms, because they have all grown up together and evolved the capability to be infectious. For this reason, it's quite unlikely that organisms evolving somewhere else would somehow coincidentally be able to infect humans. There aren't any humans on other planets yet, for those organisms to interact with.

Although this is very unlikely, planetary protection does explicitly address the possibility that astronauts could get infected by life from elsewhere-in that case, we'd have to be very careful about bringing them back to Earth.

A more likely, but still remote, possibility is that Mars organisms might find specific locations on Earth to be pleasant, and by growing there could change the environmental conditions on Earth-like rabbits in Australia eating all the grass. Mars organisms might think that the Antarctic is a wonderful warm pleasant place-if they were to grow on top of the ice sheets and absorb more sunlight, that might cause faster melting.

We don't expect that Mars organisms could cause harm to the Earth, but the policies of planetary protection are designed to ensure we take appropriate precautions even against unlikely events-that's the only way to be responsible to the people and environment of the Earth, as humans explore space.

Rutkowski and Dittman write that Michalak felt pain and sickness after his encounter and was treated at a hospital, initially claiming the burns were caused by airplane exhaust. Michalak's family physician reportedly stated that Michalak was confused and dazed but rational, and showed signs of hair loss and a series of raised oval-shaped sores on Michalak's chest and abdomen in a grid-like pattern, similar to a first-degree burn. Reportedly, health problems plagued Michalak for several months, including lack of appetite, weight loss, swelling, and fainting spells, despite a Mayo Clinic psychiatrist stating that Michalak was free of "significant mental or emotional illness." Michalak died in 1999, age 83

Michalak's concentration was disturbed by a noise similar to geese's grunts. When he looked up, he spotted two cigar-shaped objects, which were red and brilliant as fire. They were descending at 45 degrees, as calculated by the witness. He also noticed that, the more they approached the more oval they became.

One of the objects stopped in the air, while the other landed on a big rock 160 feet away from Michalak. After some moments, the object floating above Michalak changed its color to grey, and then flew directly west, disappearing through the clouds. The landed object also changed to grey, and then to a color similar to incandescent stainless steel.

From the inferior opening of the object, some violet light rays were emitted. As Michalek was using special glasses to examine the quartz, the rays didn't affect him. The object had a sulphurous smell, and a humming noise.

Half an hour passed, and Michalak still was observing the spaceship. Suddenly, a door opened and he could see that the interior of the UFO was very illuminated. He approached some meters and heard some voices coming from inside the ship.

Believing that the object was an experimental American flying object, he tried to make a contact in English. As no answers were given, he tried other languages in vain. Nervous, he walked to the open door, and saw a panel and some lights inside the ship.

He did not see anybody, so he waited. Suddenly, the door closed. Despite the surprise, he discovered a colorful glass around the UFO. It was very well-conserved, with no cracks. He attempted to touch it, but his glove simply melted, the heat hurting his hand through the glove's protection.

Quietly, a metallic box full of holes got off the UFO, what seemed to be a grid-like exhaust vent. A steamy explosion occurred, and some kind of gas was expelled in his direction. Immediately, his clothes started to burn. As the object flew after the other one, Michalak was left behind desperately trying to extinguish the fire.

Once the fire was extinguished, Michalak felt pain and sickness and noticed a metallic odour from the inside of his body, like the smell of something electric that is burning. He tried to go to the motel, but he stopped several times, feeling sick. He was later treated upon arrival at a hospital. He initially claimed the burns were caused by airplane exhaust.

Michalak's family physician, R.D. Otaway, reported that Michalak was confused and dazed, but rational. Otaway further reported hair loss, and a series of raised oval-shaped sores on Michalak's chest and abdomen in a grid-like pattern, similar to a first-degree burn. The nature of these burns remained difficult to explain.

Health problems plagued Michalak for several months, including lack of appetite, weight loss, swelling, and fainting spells. A Mayo Clinic psychiatrist stated Michalak was free of "significant mental or emotional illness."

By late June of 1967, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) had taken an interest in Michalek's claims. They could not identify the site on their own, and on June 1st they brought Michalek with them. However, Michalek could not locate the site, which raised further doubts regarding his claim. The RCMP also confirmed that Michalek had consumed multiple bottles of beer the night before the sighting.

By June 26th, Michalek had located the site and recovered personal belongings he had left there. The RCMP obtained soil samples from the location, which they tested for radioactivity. The tests were positive.

On July 28th, Michalek and RCMP officers together identified a semi-circle on the rock face at the scene, 15 feet in diameter, where the moss had been somehow removed. There were traces of radiation in a fault in the rock across the center of the landing spot. No trace of radiation was found around the outer perimeter of the circle or in the moss or grass below the raised portion of the rock.

The radioactive material found in the rock fault was radium 226, an isotope in wide commercial use and also found in nuclear reactor waste. They concluded that the level of radiation posed no danger to humans in the area.

The Department of National Defence identifies the Falcon Lake case as unsolved.

Jackie Gleason And Ufos

I have good memories of watching Jackie Gleason (yes, I'm that old) his show, the Honey Mooners, etc. ("Norton" always cracked me up.) Gleason was more than just an actor in a television comedy program, he was a very talented man. This is from his obitutary from the New York Times:

When he was not performing, Mr. Gleason was often conducting or composing mellow romantic music, 'plain vanilla music' he called it, which was marketed in record albums with such unpretentious titles as 'Lazy Lively Love' and 'Oooo!' He recorded more than 35 albums with the Jackie Gleason Orchestra, and millions of the records were sold. ~ (June 25, 1987)

It's an interesting obituary, full of information about his creative life, but no mention (naturally) of his UFO interest.

I remember reading in FATE magazine a few years ago, in a "filler" or sidebar type thing, that the great Jackie Gleason donated his library of UFO books to, I think, someplace in Florida. Gleason had something like over 200 books about UFOs. Here's an item about Gleason's "occult library" on exhibit in Miami, Florida.

Neither Jordan nor Clark were particularly familiar with the Scriptures, so they took a Bible study course that was made available to them. This course didn't teach doctrine per se, but rather, taught how to study the Bible, how to use a concordance, how to use a Greek lexicon, etc. First they learned how to research the Bible, then the research began. When taken in its proper context, the Bible paints a pretty clear picture of what we're actually dealing with in the UFO/abduction realm. What CE 4 Research Group promotes are the findings so far in the ongoing Biblical research. It is a premise called "spiritual warfare." Spiritual, because the data leads to the conclusion of a spiritual reality of the phenomenon. Warfare, because it is indeed a war we are engaged in; a war that effects each and every one of us as individuals. He has "Space Brothers" and they have come to Earth to reach him and teach him. * The Space Brothers have advanced information that they wish to impart to their weaker brethren. The Space Brothers want man to join an intergalactic spiritual federation. * The Space Brothers are here to teach, to help awaken man's spirit, to help man to rise to higher levels of vibration so that he may be ready to enter new dimensions... * Man stands now in the transitional period before the dawn of a New Age. With peace, love, understanding, and brotherhood on man's part, he will see a great new era begin to dawn. * If man should not raise his vibratory rate within a set period of time, severe Earth changes and major cataclysms will take place. Such disasters will not end the world, but shall serve as cataclysmic crucibles to burn off the dross of unreceptive humanity. Those who die in such dreadful purgings will be allowed to reincarnate on higher levels of development so that their salvation will be more readily accomplished."(18) The implication is this. There's a new "Cosmic Gospel," a new spiritual plan of the ages that the "New Age" are gobbling down as fast as these entities can feed it to them, however in nearly every case, what they are being told is diametrically apposed to what we are told in the Biblical record. This "truth" they are being fed is a lie of literally cosmic proportion. But according to CE 4 Research Group's study of the Biblical record, the alien's "truth" becomes recognizable for the lie it really is, which is a scam, and not a very original scam at that. So much so that it is difficult to dismiss UFO's regardless of our underlying beliefs. But, most of the reports and concepts of UFO's cannot fit with the basic principles of physics -which are the same throughout the universe. Most other books fail to research and offer support in this area rendering their claims less than believable. What is different and exceptionally interesting and valuable about this book is that it takes a 180 degree turn to review this information from a completely different paradigm - UFO's could be from an alternative dimension. From this multi-dimensional vantage point, many of the odd facts, and abduction and other reports on UFO's fit together better and are more easily accepted. It also touches upon some of the laws of physics to show why these laws are at issue and therefore must be dealt with. Going a step further, Missler and Eastman then review ancient passages in an attempt to determine if this multi-dimensional paradigm can fit with Jewish, or Christian scriptural beliefs. From this book emerges the following: we cannot explain away UFO's - there is just too many reports that cannot be explained; and, most UFO reports do not fit with the principles of physics as we know them.; therefore an alternative paradigm is required in order to better understand UFO phenomena. The Missler / Eastman paradigm seems to best pull the facts together as we believe we know them. Note for New Agers: Don't avoid this book, or be afraid of it because it concludes with a Christian perspective on UFO. The book is not steeped in "hell fire and brimstone" or sermons. Rather, it is a serious book that takes a deep look at anomalous and challenging UFO phenomena. Mysteries Spiral Ufo Seen Over Australia

On June 7th 2010, Inhabitants of of New South Wales in Australia witnessed innovative UFO creating a light show in the sky. The report of eye witnesses sounds a lot equal the actual objects seen as the portico opening over China doll and Norway. Introduce somebody to an area seeing the UFO described:

Authorities are claiming the object to be a Falcon 9 rocket launched by Occasion X (Occasion Exploration Technologies) a toward the inside firm.

Occasion X has neither declared or denied this to be their rocket deformity. Still, to us at Arcturi, the object sounds moral equal innovative inter-dimensional portico opened up by the extra terrestrials.
