Ancient Astronauts A Debunked Idea Already

Ancient Astronauts A Debunked Idea Already
"The term 'ancient astronauts' designates the speculative notion that aliens are responsible for the most ancient civilizations on earth. The most notorious proponent of this idea is Erich von D"aniken, author of several popular books on the subject. His Chariots of the Gods? Unsolved Mysteries of the Past", for example, is a sweeping attack on the memories and abilities of ancient peoples. Von D"aniken claims that the myths, arts, social organizations, etc., of ancient cultures were introduced by astronauts from another world. He questions not just the capacity for memory, but the capacity for culture and civilization itself, in ancient peoples. Prehistoric humans did not develop their own arts and technologies, but rather were taught art and science by visitors from outer space. (this picture is from Val Camonica Italy)

Daniken's Pottery Deception

Where is the proof for von D"aniken's claims? Some of it was fraudulent. For example, he produced photographs of pottery that he claimed had been found in an archaeological dig. The pottery depicts flying saucers and was said to have been dated from Biblical times. However, investigators from "Nova "(the fine public-television science program) found the potter who had made the allegedly ancient pots. They confronted von D"aniken with evidence of his fraud. His reply was that his deception was justified because some people would only believe if they saw proof ("The Case of the Ancient Astronauts," first aired 3/8/78, done in conjunction with BBC's "Horizon" and Peter Spry-Leverton)!

Daniken's History of Deceit

Looking into his past, (Ref: New York Times Book Review), we should not be too surprised to find that his rather broad criterion of truthfulness has, at times, brought him into conflict with the law. A court in his native Switzerland found Von Daniken guilty of embezzlement, forgery, and fraud, sentencing him to three and a half years in prison. While operating a Swiss hotel. it seems he fraudulently obtained money by misrepresenting his financial assets, this experience in deception later proving invaluable in his literary career. It was during this stay as a guest of the Swiss government that he wrote his second book, Gods from Outer Space, now also a best seller.

However, most of von D"aniken's evidence is in the form of specious and fallacious arguments. His data consists mainly of archaeological sites and ancient myths. He begins with the ancient astronaut assumption and then forces all data to fit the idea. For example, in Nazca, Peru, he explains giant animal drawings in the desert as an ancient alien airport. The likelihood that these drawings related to the natives' religion or science is not considered. He also frequently reverts to false dilemma reasoning of the following type: "Either" this data is to be explained by assuming these primitive idiots did this themselves "or" we must accept the more plausible notion that they got help from extremely advanced peoples who must have come from other planets where such technologies as anti-gravity devices had been invented." His devotion to this theory has not dwindled, despite contrary evidence, as is evidenced by still another book on the subject, "Arrival of the Gods : Revealing the Alien Landing Sites at Nazca "(1998)"."

We have no reason to believe our ancient ancestors' memories were so much worse than our own that they could not remember these alien visitations well enough to preserve an accurate account of them. There is little evidence to support the notion that ancient myths and religious stories are the distorted and imperfect recollection of ancient astronauts recorded by ancient priests. The evidence to the contrary--that prehistoric or 'primitive' peoples were (and "are") quite intelligent and resourceful--is overwhelming.

Mayan Astronaut? - (Daniken's Astronaut Fantasy)

"Palenque is a place in Mexico, and there is a large stone in the temple and on the stone is a kind of being sitting like in a rocket." -- Erich Von Daniken. Von Daniken claimed that ancient civilizations from Mexico to China were visited by a space-faring race. His Maya astronaut was presented as a critical piece of evidence, the smoking gun that proved his theories: Here, he claimed, was a graphic image of an ancient astronaut, looking very like John Glenn lying in the Mercury capsule that took him into orbit in 1962. Of course, on closer inspection, the resemblance isn't nearly as convincing as Von Daniken suggested. And we might have expected extraterrestrials who traveled light years to reach our planet to have space ships somewhat more advanced than 1960's earth technology. "Well I certainly don't see any need to regard him as a space man. I don't see any oxygen tubes. I see a very characteristically drawn Maya face". - (Maya glyph expert Ian Graham)... But the biggest problem with Von Daniken's fantasy (apart from the sheer implausibility of it all) is that his "astronaut" is one of the most-studied of Maya sculptures. It is no spaceman at all, but a Palenque ruler named Pakal. Sarcophagus lid, tomb of Pakal (Pyramid of the Inscriptions, Palenque). Maya astronomy was remarkable, but its achievements came from careful naked eye observation, not ET. We aren't sure exactly how pyramids were built -- but construction required nothing more than practical mastery of ropes, pulleys, and ramps. In fact, pyramids were among the earliest stone buildings constructed in many parts of the world because they are the easiest to build: A broad mound of stone and rubble tapering upward is a natural choice for early experiments in architecture. The Maya were accomplished builders, but their stone-age technology was simple. They never discovered how to construct a true arch. You'd have thought ET would have shown them how!

NOTE:

St. Paul WARNED us a long time ago regarding this deceitfulness.

"BEWARE lest any man (including Daniken) spoil you through philosopy and VAIN DECEIT, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and NOT After Christ" - Colossians 2:8

There are Aliens in Space (or the 2nd Heaven), but these beings are cast out from their Original Dwelling place because of they're rebellion against their CREATOR.
